Default update

Hello again all,

I got a few more PM's today and a member called me up and offered his help. Really great forum here. thanks.

The car hit the driveway, and i got busy today detailing the car. i know im working backwards, but i could not stand looking at her all dirty and sad. The car sat in a bodyshop for a couple of years, then was moved outdoors for another 4 years...so it got all kinds of spray paint deposited on the car and glass, from the bodyshop paint!...Sad.

Anyway, i cleaned all the glass, all around, from the front windshield all the way back. The glass also had paint deposits and it was all garbled. So since the "invisible glass" spray didn't do much, i took out a very fine wool cloth and some acetone and i cleaned all the paint from all the glass/windshields. Came out beautiful. All the glass is smooth now and clear. One couldn't see anything on the oustide, sitting in the car, the glass was all hazy and covered with paint.

Then i detailed the interior and moved on to the engine.
Here are some pictures...

Tomorrow, i will jack it up and start poking at the engine belly to assess the damage. Thank you all for your advice and help.

Sam

Very nice. Are you sure that car is black...looks more moca brown to me...though it might be the lighting. There should be a sticker inside the driver's door jamb that tells the color code. Regardless, nice start to a project.

Hopefully the engine is save able. At least it's the right color...the color of money...because...well, you'll find out soon enough...lol. Good luck, you will find plenty of great advice here and looking forward to following along.

thank you Sir.

Sunny warm day, so i jumped on it. Frank my neighbor and great guy (retired VW mechanic) stopped by today and helped with it. Few beers later, the pan was down!!!

SO i took a few pictures as im not sure what im looking for. I also measure as i was advised in previous posts, and the depth is 3 inches from the bearing to the lip.

See pictures. Fingers crossed.

I don't want to be a Debbie downer. But I suspect the intake pieces may not have been cleaned properly before paint or powder coat. We've seen it before. That engine may have ingested a bunch of blast media.
Check the oil.

The bearing location is fine and would have little to do with any crank issue anyway. It would have been nice to have marked the shaft to see if when the pinch bolt was undone how far the coupler moved more as point of interest than anything else.
You need to pry the flywheel and crank forward and backwards to measure the movement of the crank in the thrust bearing. A dial indicator is best for this. Then you will know if that is the problem.

Thanks james,
The pinch bolt was missing when I dropped the pan.
I will check the oil next and report.

I installed a new battery and tried to crank, the engine turned over slow and like " heavy" with some metal sounds. I'm thinking something is loose or broken in there...

I know it won't start because the fuel is four years old and needs a complete flush.

Thanks for the advice. Will see what's next.

If there was no bolt that is a BIG warning that someone was in there and the prior owner did tell you there was a bearing problem.... You need to measure the crankshaft end play because a badly worn main bearing (thrust bearing) will make the engine crank over very slowly. Not good news but I think he told you. If badly worn it has ruined the crankshaft and engine block.
