Default Would a pre-purchase inspection have caught this?

A bit off-topic, but I think you might be interested in what I found this morning in the heater box of my Austin-Healey.

The two grenades are empty, but their igniters may be live. The item at upper left is something else, looks nasty, and I can't tell if its empty.

I think its the sort of thing thrown out by a cluster bomb. I suspect it's made of magnesium and incorporates shrapnel.

Three trooper cars in the driveway. A bomb unit is on the way. They wanted to know who I got the car from.

Both this car and the 928 next to it already look like they've been in an explosion, so I'm not that concerned myself. But I'm certainly curious. Theories?

Photo of bomb defusing robot going up your driveway is now required.

How long have you owned the car and did you ever drive it?

I've had the car only since last October, and drove it only 78 miles before the clutch went south. The PO didn't work on it himself, he got it in '07 off eBay.

My deposition will make an interesting addition to the car's records. Gosh, I wonder if it's going to appear on CarFax.

The PPI should at least have mentioned a suspicious rattle in the vicinity.......
We need an ordinance expert to identify the "upper" item. What the hell is that thing?

In pic above. top left is one of many projectilies of a cluster bomb, IIRC top middle is a training type hand grenade used for basic and Infinitry training exercices (trained with a few in 1973) bottom right is a circa 1918-1960 MK-2 aka: "pineapple"hand grenade. T

You called the authorities!?!? Get ready for the **** probulus. It's coming your way.

I wouldn't think the PPI would go into the detail of finding this in the heater core box unless it was for a 100 point insp deal, and this doesn't sound like that.

Hmm, I thought the little ball was also a hand grenade with a twist up lever to arm? I think I've seen on like this in a museum in Krakow or St Petersberg.

We all knew that old British cars are dangerous. Here's more proof!

Yeah, once they confirm that nothing is dangerous, don't let them confiscate. That stuff has to be collectible.

I would guess someone living abroad wanted to bring them back and put them in the heater box.

Then must have forgotten about it...

Would be interesting to find out more of the car's history.

OK, the expert has come and taken it all away. The one item was indeed a submunition from a cluster bomb. But it had signs of "UN blue" paint, meaning it was probably an inert "trainer". The ignitors were spent, he said.

So, much ado about nothing. Probably. I'm fine without 'em.

But I really must start inspecting the cars I buy more carefully.

Even without a picture of the Austin-Healey, I would have to say. "Damn, that car's THE BOMB!!"........literally...

As far as the **** probing goes, I did have to sit in the trooper's car to give a deposition. Ironic - I buy two Porsches, drive them at stupid speeds, but my only time in the hot seat is over a bomb found in a car that can't go over 60.
