Lightbulb Phillips LED H4 Headlamps

I recently found a set of H4 lenses, and wanted to purchase some LED bulbs to go with them. I'll most likely start out with standard halogen bulbs... but knowing myself and my tendency to purchase reversible upgrades, I knew I'd be buying LED bulbs sooner or later. I was having a difficult time figuring out which style of LED headlights are most current and have the best design... there are many options out there.

I noticed that JDMastar has consistently good reviews on Amazon, and have offered all different types of bulbs, designated by a Gen number. Currently, they are on the 8th gen of light style. They've offered everything from the old design with fans, to the woven copper heatsink that you spread out yourself. The company has a customer service number (good sign), and offer a 2 year warranty with their products. I gave them a call, and the rep was knowledgeable and helpful. He was even familiar with older Porsches and the types of lights customers have been installing in them (for example, not needing a decoder to over-ride error codes). All these things made me confident in the company and their products. He even gave me a 15% off code they're currently running, which I did not ask about. So, I made a purchase.

I ordered their 8th gen H4 bulbs, which have a new chip design that is the closest throw pattern to a halogen bulb that has been offered to date. They also offer a unique way to adjust the beam pattern, which competitors do not offer.

These bulbs use the Philips Luxeon ZES chips detailed HERE.

I'll report back with the results once they are installed, and take some photos of the process. I have an ExTech Easyview EA30 Light Meter, and will be taking light intensity measurements at 25 and 50 feet, and also show beam cutoff pattern with the H4 euro lenses... comparing it to the stock Halogen H5's and the stock halogen OSRAM H4's that came with the new lenses.

Here's an unboxing video:

A comparison video between this new style, an older style LED, and the stock halogen:

And finally, a thermal test comparing the LED bulb with a 90/100 watt halogen:

Updated with product videos and the process I'll be using to compare the stock H5 bulbs, the halogen OSRAM H4 bulbs that came with the lenses, and the JDMastar (lumiled) Philips ZES LED H4 bulbs.

When you get them installed I'm wanting to see them. So far I like what I'm seeing.

Are you going to be using any special trim ring for your H4 headlight since the design is very different from the H5?

These should go in the 8" H4/H5 with no issue.

For some reason I thought H4s were 7" only. I am having flashbacks of 944 ownership and sealed beams.

Sean is right. I have the 8" Euro lenses from a German car. Henry over at LosAngelesAutoParts (eBay) hooked me up for a Christmas gift to myself... I got 2 for nearly the price of 1.

Traxtar, may I see a pic of these headlights please? I'm curious. I just picked up a replacement H5 for my car, but I would like to know what a more modern design looks like.

Doh, yea. Forgot. You should be able to order these for the H5 though. Who knows what the light pattern will be like though.

Lens looks exactly like this from the front. What else do you want to see? This isn't my pic (my car is black), but there are pics everywhere of the H4 LHD lenses.

Well I think its obvious it will be at least as crappy as the H5 is with an incandescent bulb - which is a pretty poor starting point. Likely it will be a lot brighter which will mean it will be a lot worse still - light all over the place.

I'd strongly advise against putting brighter bulbs of any kind in H5 lamps - it is always really bad news for everyone else on the road.

Good buy. That recent set he had listed looked pretty nice, and priced fairly. Wondered who bought them, wonder no more.
