Default Audio questions

The 4" speakers from 33 years ago have butyl surrounds that are in good condition - to my surprise. Impedance at 1kHz seems uniform at about 3.4-3.8 ohms, and none of the voice coils are rubbing, so I will use them. The sound is okay above 200Hz, but bass is lacking.

eBay offers round subwoofers that fit inside the spare. Clever. Such pulls (from wrecks?) run from $60 to ridiculous, but no specification is provided, no pinout. QUESTIONS:
  • Are those round subs powered (active)?
  • What's the typical freq range for such compact designs?
  • What's a good acoustically transparent replacement for the original plastic cover over the spare+sub?
  • For a non-audiophile, would such a solution be good enough?
  • If the center cavity of the spare is filled with speaker, where will that pump fit?

Thanks!

Some of these questions would be for audio experts. Give a call to a reputable entity such as Crutchfield or the like. I custom cut quality hard oak and that supports the unit. It fit in the two 'claws' and then locked in under the latch. It is bordered with rubber as well between the wood and the body. Carpet meticulously cut, and a robust metal speaker cover was screwed in to keep the carpet in place and cover fixed. The panel comes in and out very easily so I can access what I need to in the well. I've put hockey bags, luggage right on top of the thing. As for the pump - you won't be needing it without a spare. Your AAA card will be your friend. I keep a can of pressurized quick fill in my 'black bag' - this will help me limp somewhere.

I have one like this (Thanks Matt!):

It's a "Custom Autosound" unit.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/231090585383?item=231090585383&viewitem=&vxp=mtr&clk_rvr_id=926089937935&rmvSB=true
It fits where the spare wheel is but to big to fit in it.

A good thread on this subject here:

Very satisfied with it.

For my '78 I took the spare tire out--if you have AAA they'll come and pick you up and take you to a tire shop for repair or replacement. AAA guy on the phone actually sourced a shop with the size tire I needed, etc. I had a foam rubber donut shaped seat cushion you can purchase at a medical supply shop, took the cover off and made the hole a little larger to accommodate the so called spare tire woofer and then just put the stock cover over it all. I'm not an audiophile but it was nice to have a good amount of bass. I have the $49 sub woofer mentioned here but unfortunately it stopped working after a year with no more available (cheap Chinese sh##t). Trying to find someone who can take a look at it for a reasonable fee.

There are a couple of threads on this; here's a link to one of them.

I am happy with my subwoofer inside the spare. I picked up a used Bose unit from an Acura (RDX ?) on eBay. I am powering it with a small Rockford Fosgate mono amp that sits in the well next to the spare tire (the boss amp I first installed wasn't up to snuff). This set up can capably deliver far more base and thump than I could ever want. You don't really need a cover other than the carpet and if you want, a layer of foam, 1/2 inch. You'll just have to store your pump and such elsewhere, like in a bag.

I have the one pictured..
It has its own amp andnis driven from rca or line level inputs..
I was very impressed with the sound. I paid $49.00 for mine.
Not sharkwoofer quality but adds nice bass.

I am looking for a Porsche radio. I have a 1965 Porsche 356. I had a Retrosound radio but it quit working after two months and was interested in seeing if anyone has tried Custom Autosound and had an opinion on their radio. Thanks in advance.

Have a spare tire sub as part of the factory system in my Cayenne S. I'm going to test fit that one in my 928 when I get a chance. It sounds great in the Cayenne and adds a lot from way in the back. In a 928 with far less space to fill, it should be fine. I do not believe it is powered, but I have a couple of spare amps lying around.

If you want a decent off the shelf solution, this alpine 8" is a very nice sub, sharp punchy bass but very quick and accurate.

I have one in my 87 and it fits perfectly, plus plenty of room for an amp. Spare tire is on a shelf and CAA card in my wallet.

If you want the best solution, you can't beat Han's sharkwoofer, although I'm not sure if has finished selling the latest run. Search "sharkwoofer"

Your 356 needs an original Becker or Blaupunkt head unit. It's originally a 6-Volt car, which presents its own challenges when it comes to accessories. The opening in the dash is not even close to any of the more modern-spec head units, so you really are limited to the correct period pieces unless you want to do life-threatening metal surgery on it.

With that said, the units pictured in your link, while they kinda look sorta like what someone might think was installed there originally, are sorta close but that's not the same as "original". In the U.S., many 356 radios were dealer installed, so there's maybe a bit of wiggle room. If you are a purist, search out the original radio, have it rebuilt/refurbished (SW Stereo?), and live happier.

Custom Autosound is a notch below Retrosound in quality. Although they both have "issues". Retrosound will usually work with
You on defective units I speak from experience. 30 years in the industry. Owned a chain of 22 autosound. stores.
