Next time it is running, check your ignition monitor relay - right side of the passenger footwell, behind the carpeting, by the LH controller/ECU. It has a clear plastic case. Are either the green or red LED's lit up? I wouldn't run it long especially if you are smelling gas.

See my post above. Your symptoms sound like the injectors are running on a fixed pulse width which is the limp home mode that the ecu defaults to when the maf signal is out of range. Even if there are other problems, having a known good maf will simplify diagnosing the car.

That's a much better intro post than the rash of "tell me how to my umpteenth vanity car that I'll never actually work on"!

Thanks Hilton. I read your post which makes a lot of sense. I just purchased a MAF from Tom at 928International. Meanwhile I'm waiting I'll be cleaning all grounds. A lot of work with too little time but it's going to good!

Guys my 928 is an Automatic and the transmission is stuck on parking. The shifter moves ok up & down, but it doesn't disengage from parking. I opened up the shifter plate and the cables look attached from there...haven't been able to go look at the rear portion of the cable attachment. Any ideas?

I'm hoping you're right Jeff. I've been searching for a similar situation all over the forum and found nothing.

When I bought mine the auto shift cable was binding so I replaced it. Here is my thread on the issue. It might be of some help to you.

Thanks for sharing. I'll be digging into this issue this Sunday...plus my MAF, plus everything else. I can't wait till I can get it running.

Many discussions of this here. It is a known fail point, the load can cause an engine to stall at idle.
The best part is, it doesn't cost anything to check it yourself.

For us newbies, how do we do this? Are there any instructions with photos or video links available?

Here's a pic of a properly placed clamp. Also see this link. http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/1...0Procedure.htm
It is for a MY 88, but the essentials should work for you.
Also see the remainder of Dwayne's write ups for other jobs - they are used by many here.

Now would be a good time to read thru the New Visitor FAQ thread posted at the top of this forum.

It's in there.

Well...need to continue searching for the problem. I installed the new MAF and it did the same thing when I started her up. Barely idle for a 15-20 seconds and it stalled. I had to charge the battery. Installed it again and since then nothing. Cannot get it to fire up. I can smell fuel. Left it alone because it's probably flooded. Came back at this this morning but nothing. It cranks but doesn't fire.

Careful. If you are smelling fuel and it is idling there is some heat and you are providing an ignition source. There have been several owners that have had excess fuel build up in the cats and their cars caught fire. Kinda hard to put a fire out down there.

How is it running, is it idling correctly, is it sputtering, does it sound like all 8 cylinders are firing? Check the firing order on the ignition wires and both distributors. Also make sure that both distributors are connected properly and grounded.

Good luck and welcome to the club,

Michael
