1978 5sp #107 just arrived - aka the restoration of Minerva

SM is Italian Company that supplies Porsche the rare Magnesium wheels for the 964 RS.
I have just landed a Zermatt GTS to add to my stable. It was that or a 360. I chose well I think.

Was it one of the 1993 models out there for sale right now. Seems I saw three of them here lately.

SM also did the spider intake. However for most of MY78, the castings were different with no mfg mark. Appears either a different mfg was used early off. Alloy composition appears different as well.
Original looking alt hose with correct routing. Weather strip was around the cutout in the plastic cover. Not there anymore, or was used sporadically in production.

Yes, the alternator cooling hose was still attached to its bracket on the splash shield. It's in great shape, and not swimming in ATF from the PS reservoir.
It's really interesting- this is my first exposure to really working on an early car. All the major components are similar to those on a GTS, but it feels like there's 25% less crap in the way, the original design rationale is much clearer. In the later cars they just crammed more stuff into the same volume.
Never realized the forward exhaust heat shield is all one piece vs the two split pieces that started in '80. I'm vertical on the learning curve, here...

Out of curiosity...what's the game plan here?
Are you guys going through it entirely or just doing what needs attention right now.
Looking good, regardless. I'm getting a bit confused, I'm seeing the double lifts in the one garage, but the car is on another style lift in one of the other picture...and on another style lift at the steam cleaners...lol.
Brian.

I'm sure you noticed the captive studs on the cross-member for the rack plate. Much easier to work with than the later design, until one breaks off.

The plan is to take it pretty much apart and go through all the systems so it runs and drives as close to new as possible. The engine is leaking both coolant and oil, though they're not mixing in the crankcase or coolant. There's a pretty impressive oil leak on the passenger side cam tower, and a lake of coolant in the valley- could be as trivial as a leaking heater valve hose or as bad as a cracked head. William and I are hoping to get the engine on a stand in the next couple of days.
Oil leak:
Valley, sorta:

Simplicity? Not the word I would have chosen, but hey...lol.
Thank you, for the restoration report Rob. Good stuff, and fingers crossed for a simple repair on that coolant leak. This project has me frothing at the bit to get started on my 78...but it is a retirement project...so, I patiently wait and watch.
Brian.

It's a girl! Mark and William are pleased to announce the delivery of a 430 lb, 4.5L Teutonic V-8 at 4 PM on 10/30/15. Mom and baby are doing well.

A little flyaround video of the motor, to start cataloging what goes where.....

fun with the engine pull yesterday, feels like more of an accomplishment than it is since visually it is a big change. The little detail stuff takes all the time and there aren't those quantum optics to show for it.
the trick to eating an elephant, happens one bite at a time!
oh, and the parts list is growing, lol!
If I can talk Rob into it, when the time comes would like to reinstall the entire drivetrain from the bottom like the did from the factory.
