Default 78 shifter rod year differances

78

I have a short shifter in my 78 and do not like it and had what I thought was off of my 86 was a factory shifter rod. I ordered new parts for the original and realize that the distance between the holes on the rod is shorter or spaced closer together then the plastic friction strap. I think there are length of the shaft may be different for certain years but not the spacing of the rod. I am beginning to doubt that this shaft is off of my 86 but wanted some feedback. I am still missing one spring on back order for two months but would like to find an original shifter rod if available. Any feedback on this? Thanks

I know there were some posts in a thread in the last year or so, if my memory serves me correctly. I've tried searching but can't find the thread, which had some pics of all the shifters with centre to centre and length dimensions .... I think it may have been a post by Errka. I'll keep looking.

2 spacings....... Large is older cars, shorter is the the later "Borg synchro " teams cars. Early ones needed the extra umph

Found it! This should answer all your questions.

Edit: It wasn't quite a year ago ... it was ten! Passed the memory test with who posted ... failed miserably with the time. Could be alzheimers setting in .. evrything seems like it happened only yesterday!

Dave thanks much seems I have the 200x25mm if so I then have the wrong plastic spacer. I wonder if I can use it with out the spacer, I connected it to try and the throw is a lot longer but smoother. I believe I know this lever came out of my 86 hence the Alzheimer's statement, but it has been over 10 years. After reading your link I am going to try first with out the springs and see what happens. This seems to be a trial and error event to get the right height and throw that feels correct. The only observation is that connecting the front guide tube and rear gear shift tube seems very close in operation and takes effort to line it up with the 25mm shaft.
As it is written the older I get the better I was, does this pertain to my 78.

PO of my 79 put in the short shifter. I wouldn't have bothered. no real advantage. I like the rat rods with neat skulls on the top of that loooong shifter.

A real short shifter will make some difference. However it is a lot more than just cutting the length of the pudding spoon down.
77 to 84 are different to 85 to 95.
Do yourself a big favor and rip the ****box out and go with the all singing and dancing RogerBox 8>)

Do everyone a favour and stop whining and carping about the superlative engineering precision of the fabulously fantastic five speed, made by Porsche exclusively for the 928. An advanced example of Porsche craftmanship, prized and sought after by connoisseurs of the brand, over the common as muck ring-in slush boxes you need to drive, to accommodate your advancing years, and loss of physical and mental faculties. ... you miserable pommy git 8>)

I'll recycle this pic.

Q: What is the one thing on this '85 burn victim that made fiscal sense to having it towed?

A: That's right. The 5-speed transmission.

Rog, hope to see you at SF15- I've asked Mark to borrow the GT so I can take you out for some remedial 3-pedal dance lessons. That way you won't need so many helpers the next time you're asked to show your 5-speed at a concours.

^^ A hands-on intervention/re-education is a great idea. I posted some written instructions some time back, but obviously there were comprehension difficulties.

Wow got Roger going again
My 86 does not fit correctly so I am looking for an early version rod so Rob should I make an offer or do I have to buy the whole car?
If anyone has any info on this part please let me know!
Thanks

Dear Roger,
Please educate us newbies about the Rogerbox. Google doesn't help us here.

It's all in my signature line - Newbies need to stay away from posts by befuddled ****box users.
See the light as Porsche has done and move to the superior Roger Box.
