Not so much as stupid, but funny... When i first purchased my car, I took it to a local test station to pass smog. The owner, a very nice, elderly Vietnamese gentleman, was behind the counter. While doing the typical set-up, he was behind the counter entering data on the computer with the normal questions. (Make? Model? Year?). Now mind you, this was first thing on a Saturday morning and he was very monotone and seemingly disinterested (hey, we've all been there). After typing in the info, the engine info must have popped up because he confirmed, "5 liter V8?" When I said yes, he leaned over, looked straight at my car and said a very enthusiastic "sheeee-it!" Smiled, then went back to work like nothing had happened.

This is one of the smart things someone has said to me about a 928...

Greg Jones, (Ferrari aficionado), Parker Hall (Chief Ferrari Judge at the Pebble Beach Concourse), drooman and I were leaving Greg Jones's ultra cool, gargoyle festooned home in Florida to go out to dinner.

Parker sees my 928 as we leave the house and says "Oh wow! You have a 928, I love those cars, can I ride with you?"

The higher you go, the more they know!

Paul,

You will find more rocking horse droppings on Route 66 than you will find folks who know about the 928 in so called Porsche specialists both franchise and non franchise. At least you boys have a few excellent ones on this list scattered across the USA who we are privileged to learn from.

At least the main dealers chief mechanic here is very good on 928's and as a long time friend has helped me out a lot over the years especially when I feel as though I need a hands on type of opinion.

On the main topic a chump who I used to work with once called my 928 a "boy racer" - I promptly retorted "it is a car that real men drive". Never had anyone come vaguely close to getting past in a bend that I did not want to let by- even had a factory instructor in a 996 twin turbo up at Dubai Autodrome cook his brains with me up his chuff! He said I could go as fast as I wanted to on a hot lap and he would respond as the lead car- no contest in a straight line of course but another matter altogether in the bends especially when one can trail brake and I put the thing up the side of him several times just to say I could go past if I wanted to. "Wot Zee f**k heff you done with zat car?" he retorted after we finished a hot lap "Zee 928 does not handle like zat". I promptly responded " I have done with it what Porsche should have done but did not". He dully called his fellow professionals over and they were all grinning from ear to ear I kid you not. I was treated like Lewis Hamilton for the rest of the day!

The Mayor of our small, but wealthy Florida town had quite the ego... He got into DE's and Club Racing and had a prepared 911 3.2 powered track car. He pimped me regarding driving a 928 GT on the track by saying "Why do you drive that tank on the track?"

I promptly advised him not to attempt to keep up with me as my car was deceptively fast. He took the bait and went out behind me... I watched him flail around behind me for a while, chuckling at his frustration trying to keep up with my 90% drive. When I put the hammer down, he ended up off track and ultimately black flagged... Too frigging funny!

The town police started harassing me after that... Not so funny!

That seems like it deserves a visit to a town council meeting and call him out on it publicly.

I was out stretching the girls legs and about to stop at a light when I hear a lot of honking behind me and to the right. Thinking there might be a accident about to happen, I look back to find my way away from it.
A car comes to a screeching halt next to my passenger side and two teenagers of the Jewish faith are grinning from ear to ear with the passenger holding a smartphone across the driver to film the interaction. While the passenger is laughing (?) and holding a thumbs-up, the driver yells to me "what kind of car is that"?
I tell him its a Porsche to which he replies "that's a Porsche?????!!!! at the top of his lungs. I'm starting to think that he's a little too enthusiastic and wait for him to pull away first, but he says to me "hit it, hit it"!!
I give him a little rev to slake his thirst and he peels away before I have a chance to put the car in gear...
I guess I'll accept his enthusiasm as positive. Its more welcome than the usual *** or two that tailgate or try to race me...

Sitting at a stoplight in the S4, two Hispanic teen boys pull up beside me in a beat-up pickup, enthusiastic thumbs up, yelling, "Hey, Tony Montana!"

i go to a lot of cars and coffee's and all the above are things i have heard as well. here's a couple others:
is that a Porsche engine swap? (the v8 really throws people)
Me: yup, swapped the day it was built on the assembly line

Good lord, is that a V8?
Me: Yup.. a 5.0L 32v
Is that 5.0l in american standards or some kind or weird european conversion number? (i $hit you not..as in the L=litres...lol)

Hey, what size displacement is that motor
Me: a 302
You mean like a ford 302?
Me:Yup but designed and Engineered by Porsche
Man, i had no idea that ford gave Porsche engines in the 80's..

Saturday with our 79 and 87 at a local car show (the only one I attend each year) with the local PCA.

I was asked at least a dozen times if they were 944's.

This happened at least 5 times:
"Are those 944's?"
No, 928's
"Oh, yea, the 928 is like my favorite Porsche!!"

Appreciate the suggestion, but you clearly do not understand our town.

i was going through the check in at the main gate for an autocross at Cherry point marine air base.

The guards were all over the car taking pics, one of them said that he loved my ferrari, they were his favorite....
i corrected him and told him what it was. he didnt believe me at first, then told me that it was the coolest car that he had seen come through all day.

mind you there was a lotus, and a few other very nice rides at the event.. a number of vettes, stangs, truimph's, one lotus Elise, nice audi's, cayman, a few 911's etc....

Yes...Yes. I was at a local Car meet. I was standing beside my 88 and I saw two twenty something young men walk by. One guy said, "what is that?" His friend stated with major confidence" That's a 944 Turbo". LOL
