Stupid things people have said about 928s

My pal at work learned that I have a 928 project underway, his words:
"Oh. My. Gosh. That's like working on a nuclear missile. But in a bad way."

car show/meets
When I have my car in a meet or show it seems everyone has owned one of "these" cars before. They look and continue to talk, but the more they speak the more you realize they don't know what the heck they are talking about.
Almost always ends with them owning a 924/44.
How could you have owned those models and think that a 928 is the same???
btw, loved my previous 944's. Fun cars.

On a more positive note. I was tinkering with the 928S at our family shop one Saturday. There is a guy who leases out part of the shop who builds old school hotrods. He really knows nothing much about Porsches but is a real motor head kinda guy. After I was done I backed out of shop and happened to roll thru some carwash water that was out back...thought what the hell, and lit that sucker up...7 lbs of boost and full on wail..... As I past by his open bay in a cloud of tire smoke and RPM`s, he looked up and ran to the door just smiling and shaking his head....later that day, he quietly commented to my son, that was an awesome sight and sound as I screamed past in a 70 ft cloud of rubber smoke. He really likes my car now.....

It is sorta understandable. Same time frame, same basic layout (watercooled engine in front, transaxle in back).
I've always found it rather interesting that 2 completely separate projects ended up with such similar results (but hey - perfection is going to end up looking the same, right? ).
Had a funny conversation with a newer neighbor yesterday. He commented that it sounded like I "fixed my exhaust." He said it had a "snarly growl" before, "almost like it had a V-8 in it."
I just laughed and said "It has a V-8, I've just been taking it easy pulling out lately because gas has gotten expensive. Tromping on it is more fun, but costs more."

I've told this one before, but it fits here.
Couple of years ago a friend was running in the 360 Ferrari Challenge series at Sears Point.
I rolled up to the ticket taker in my '82 928 and held out a $20 for the entrance fee. Ticket taker said "that's OK, Ferraris get in free today."
At the next gate where you have to sign the release, they guy asked if I was "driving on the track today." I said "uhm, no just observing" and he then waved me into the Ferrari/Maserati parking corral.
Most fun I've ever had in my "Ferrari."

I've noticed a theme of mistaken-identity-Ferrari comments....
Pardon my stupignorance, but is there a Ferrari that actually resembles a 928?
Surely they aren't thinking Daytona ? California ?
Maybe it's just red cars in general ??

The Ferrari confusion comes from a few different angles:
1. Horse on the hood, many associate that with Ferrari, and since they don't really know what a 928 is......assume hose = Ferrari
2. Lay people can tell it's something "exotic" and to most in this category, Porsche = 911 and since they can tell it's not a 911....Ferrari is the next logical guess.
On that note, few years ago a woman thought my fathers 355GTS was a Mustang because "It has a horse on the front"
We need to remind ourselves that 99.9% of the population doesn't know and really do not care about our cars, and never will. Even the seasoned "car guys" have no clue because they are not into 928's.
However, there is something psychological with a lot of people that just feel compelled to say something when a cool car is in front of them. They have no real conversation or long term interest, they just want to make some kind of comment.
If I had a dollar for every time I was asked about something related to Magnum PI about my fathers 355, I could buy another 928. To "us" there isn't even a remote similairty between a 355 and a 308, but to the average Joe or casual car guy, a Ferrari is either a Testarossa from Miami Vice or 308 from Magnum PI.
Few years ago a prominent member (he's some chair person) of the Chicago PCA thought my 79 track car was a GTS. This while it was parked among 6-7 other 928's, two of them GT's and the rest S4's. Mine was the only pre 87.
But to him, for some reason, mine looked the newest (stock body work for a 79 except the front spoiler).
How many of you can point out the difference between a 63,64,65,66, and 67 Vette? I can quite easily but I grew up in "that world".
Rare people like Jay Leno and Wayne Carini really know a whole plethora of automobiles, and I'm willing to bet if caught off guard couldn't tell you a lot about the 928 in detail along the lines of the comments in this thread.

Here's one....happened about 3 days ago...I was driving Cruella home...was about half-mile from my driveway at a light...
"Is that a 944?" honest mistake and no big deal right? "928..."
Here's the wtf:
"Does that have the German glass in it?" Seriously...
"Uh, well it was built in Germany..."
Guy drives off....

You should have said yes, and you also import air from Germany to fill the tires.

Should have really blown him away by walking him out to the car, opening the rear hatch then jump back and scream "OMG, someone's stolen the motor!"

Cobras & Sharks
I pulled into the local Pep Boys one day and a guy with a REAL AC COBRA was pulling out. He turned around and pulled in behind me. We each get out and it's "I'll show you mine if you show me yours". Like I said a real '63 AC Cobra, blue Ford 289 and all. Very nice car indeed. I pop the hood and him and his buddy are "OH MY GOD , what is in that thing? What year is it? How much did it cost you?" I say it's an '83, 4.7 liter V-8 and cost me $3500. He says you mean $35,000? I say no: thirty five hundred--CASH.
