Default Cross Country Road Trip - 8,816 miles in 15 days

For those of you who don't frequent or ever visit Off Topic, this is one worth checking out:

8,816 miles
15 days
25 states

In a Porsche 911 GT3RS:

https://rennlist.com/forums/off-topi...road-trip.html

This thread really got me thinking, it has been a long time since I've been on a real road trip.

What is your dream trip with the 928?

Two road trips that have always been on my list are Route 66 and Green Bay to Key West.

Dream trip would be ship one of my cars to Germany.

This is the opposite of Doc's 99,999 odometer thread

I've had a thing about retracing the Route 66 path as well. I'm sure it would be disappointing and nowhere near as cool as I've made it out to be in my head...

My car now lives in sunny Florida. I drove it from Canada via NYC to Orlando 2 years ago. Close to 4000 mi when done. Unbelievable drive in comfort. I want to drive it to the west coast of Cali.

My "dream trip" was when I bought my 928 in Seattle, WA and drove it home to Texas. Another great trip was from Vero Beach, FL to home, straight thru.

I grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis where we had a Ronnie's 66 Drive In theater so I'm familiar with some history of Route 66. I just did the Hwy 40/Route 66 trip with Roger, Sean and Jim to Carmel. It was A great trip and we stopped where James Dean had his last meal, an apple. Unfortunately, much of Route 66 is not passable. Parts of the highway were filled with tall weeds and the concrete was crumbling. Like all things that get old, the memories are always better.

The North East is a great drive, just finished 6,000 miles in 15 days, friends thought I was nuts, owned the car for 6 months and rescued from an engine fire.

Had an absolute blast, already planning next years.

Did a 'dream trip' last year (May 14).

Green Bay (more or less) to San Francisco CA & back.

3 days out, spent the weekend, 3 1/2 days back.

Took my 76 year old mom. It was all her fault anyway...

We grew up as the typical "70s family." Vacations usually meant my two sisters and I went in the back of the station wagon and we would roadtrip around the country. But we never went west of Kansas City, where my dad's family was. My sisters live out in Oakland, each with a husband and kid(s). Mom has flown out to see them several times, but has never driven through the western mountains or desert.

When I first got my 928 in 2013, I was describing it to her, comparing it to my 944. She hadn't seen the 928 yet because I had put it in storage immediately after getting it home (January in Wisconsin). She didn't like riding in the 944 much. Too cramped, loud, bumpy ect. I told her that the 928 was bigger, faster, smoother, quieter, roomier inside. That it was designed and intended for long distance, high speed road trips. That if you wanted to take a roadtrip down to Texas or Florida, it would be the perfect car. Without missing a beat, she said: "Oh. We should take it out to California and visit your sisters." Really? She said: "Yes, really. I'll even pay for the gas." Oh... Let me think about it. So I thought about it.
I had just gotten the car, had barely driven it. I told her to let me drive it the first summer, sort out all the issues, learn it, decide if I can trust it. If all went well, we'd go spring of 2014.

So that's what I did. Got most of the stuff fixed and sorted out. Did the Motor Mounts/Oil Pan Gasket in early fall. After that, I thought it would be a good idea to do a "shakedown trip." A one day trip to see how the car did and how she did in the car.

And we had a ball. Left early in the morning, up into Upper Michigan. Along the shore to Manistique, up towards Marquette, a quick trip through the mostly deserted K I Sawyer SAC base (now a half full industrial park). Had lunch & came back. 500 miles in about 8 hours. Mom had a good time. Thought the car was very comfortable to ride in, even on less than perfect roads. She really liked the power when passing on two lane roads. Taking it up well over 80 on the pass meant we got back in our lane sooner.

Put the car away for the winter and did a few projects while it was parked, nothing really big.

As spring approached, we finalized the plans. Go in mid-May. After the weather got good, but before the summer season traffic. Out on 90 to Rapid City SD, drop south and cross the Black Hills into Wyoming, through Lusk to Douglas, 25 to Casper, drop south on the secondary roads across Muddy Gap to Rawlins, then 80 west. Coming back, drop south from Salt Lake City, pick up 6 across Soldier Summit to Green River, then 70 across Colorado through the Rockies (Glenwood Canyon, Vail Pass, Eisenhower tunnel). I took along a fairly complete tool kit, a bunch of spare fuses, relays & 'odds and ends'. I figured worst case, I get towed to the nearest town, call Roger and scream "Help!!! I need a fuel pump overnighted to the Super 8 Motel in the middle of nowhere!!!" And if that didn't work, rent a U-Haul truck & trailer and drag it home.

As the time got closer and closer, I began to think I had completely lost my mind. Take my 76 year old mom, who has a list of health issues as long as my arm, and my 30 year old exotic supercar, point it west and go until we run out of land. What could possibly go wrong?

Took off on a Wednesday morning. Made Rapid City the first night. It was a constant question to her of "How are you doing?" and a response of "Fine, this is fun." I had said that we could turn back at any time if she wanted to, and the first night was a good time to ask. She didn't want to.

Across the Black Hills and into Wyoming was really cool. Through Wyoming on the secondary roads is very pretty. We stopped at the Independence Rock Historical site (https://www.wyomingtourism.org/thing...oric-Site/2515) and asked a lady to take our picture. She was a bit surprised we wanted it by the car instead of the historic stuff, and looked at me funny when I said "The whole trip is about the car, and it's all her fault" (pointing at my mom).
Made it across Wyoming and Utah by the end of the day. ran 75-85 most of the way. 80 west of SLC is posted 80 mph, so I ran that a bit faster. the car started to shake above 90, so that was as fast as we ran. But it ran great at 90. Mom wasn't uncomfortable at those speeds either. She asked how fast we were going a couple times, and each time commented that it really didn't feel like we were going that fast. Stopped the second night at Wendover on the UT/NV border. Its really close to Bonneville. By chance, we stayed at the same place the Cali Speed Assn guys use. The whole lobby was covered with pictures and posters from the Salt Flats.
Got rolling the next morning (Friday), hoping to make Oakland before rush hour got bad. Did 90 across NV and made good time. Up and over Donner Pass was really pretty. Did 75 or so most of the way up & down. Even on the curves posted 45 or 50. Again, mom was impressed at how solid and "planted" the car felt. She said that if we were doing these kinds of speeds in her car, she'd be scared silly. But not in the 928.

Made it to Oakland just as rush hour was starting, but before it got too bad. My sister was rather surprised we made it there that early (hey, it's a fast car ) Spent a very nice weekend with both sisters and their families.

Headed back home on Monday morning after the kids left for school. Back across California, up and over Donner (took it "easy" and only ran about 65-70), back across the Nevada desert. Made Wendover and stayed at the same place. Got rolling in the morning, across the salt flats to SLC, then dropped south and picked up 6 at Provo. Across Soldier Summit into "red rock" country. It's not Moab, but the geology is very similar. Picked up 70 in Green River and then into Colorado and across the Rockies. I had driven that route a couple of times in the big truck and knew how amazing it is. I had tried to describe it, but words fall short. Mom was absolutely awed by the beauty. She said that she hadn't believed it would be as beautiful as I had said, and that it was even more amazing than I had described.

Through Denver and up 76, stopped for the night in Sterling. Across Nebraska & Iowa on Wednesday, nothing special, but still fun in the 928. Made Dubuque and decided to stop. Mom was very tired, and she can't sleep in a moving car (she was in a bad accident when she was in college). Got up the next morning and were home before lunch.

4500 miles in 6 1/2 days. ~20mpg. The car was great. I went through about 4 quarts of oil, consumed more when around 90, almost nothing 70 or below. Only problems were that the odometer stopped in SD on the way out (had replaced the gear and didn't shim the wheels as Dwayne suggests). Caught a rock through a turn signal and cracked a foglight lens. That was it.

An amazing trip in an amazing car.

Edit to add: TL/DR - took my 76 year old mom in the 928 on a road trip. Drove out to California from Wisconsin for a weekend. Had a ball.

Pics or...
Thinking I may need to do a DC-NS run. Would be a lot driving in a short period of time. When you have to cover ground, I've learned, its a much different experience than when you radiate out and can wander at will.

The wife, kids and I drove down to South Carolina from Chicago a bit earlier this year....was driving the pass through the Smokey Mountains and was thinking about how fun that stretch would be in the 928.

The scenery was absolutely beautiful, the elevation changes fun and man....I can only imagine the rush of going through all those turns.
