Question gear ratios

i read how some of you modified 928s are reaching speeds of 180 plus so what gear ratios are you using. For me in my 83 5 speed it seems 5th gear is some what useless. And what i mean by that is third i can get to about 110 mph and 4th to about 140 and a little over and by the time i can get it into 5th the car really doesnt pull. I also have stock gears.

Lou,
You have the right gears in your 83 (2.20), but not enough horsepower.
A GT has a 2.73 and go to 171mph with 330hp. The GT runs out of gear and HP right around the same time. I'm sure there are a few GT's that may have hit 180 just before bouncing off the rev. limiter.

John,

That means 180 mph or so is top speed no matter the hp (for a GT). Now how do some modified 928's out there exceed 200 mph with stock transmission, and stroked engines that redline at lower rpm than stock?

Always been a mystery and I'm glad someone asked the question

TIA
