Default Middle-aged Wrench Turner, New to 928, New to the Forum

Hi, all, my name is Dan. I'm 39 and a fairly experienced shade tree mechanic. I have worked on every car I've ever owned including a 1980 MGB, 1984 Chevy S10, 1991 Saab 900 Convertible (current dd), and a 1988 Porsche 924. I'm currently working on an 83 928s which will become my dd if all goes well.

so, here is the lowdown:

about a month and a half ago, I traded a 1991 Saab 900 convertible for this 83 model 928 and a 79 euro model 928 parts car. The man I traded with said the car would want to run, but it wasn't getting fuel. After getting into things, I am a little dubious of his assessment.

The fuse and relay panel has been pulled out and swapped. The ignition cylinder was broken and I have been trying to turn it over with a screwdriver, to no avail. The screwdriver engages the mechanism but it will not turn the starter. I can hear the relay click though. I jumped the starter across to post on it to make sure that it works, and it does. I now have a jumper wire coming from number 14 on the 14 pin connector that I am jumping to the positive terminal by the fender. There is very little spark coming from the coil. Nothing is coming through the distributor. I checked the infamous green wire and it looks fairly good at both ends and near the fender, the connector is gone, but the blades are in good shape.

There is so much to be done to this car. I am currently not necessarily asking any questions, although any suggestions you have as to why there would be no power, no response from the ignition, or anything else, I will investigate.

I am on my iPad right now. When I get back to my computer I will upload or link to as many photos as I can take.

Was the CE panel swapped with the same part number? How can you tell it was swapped. Is power getting to the starter? Cleaning all the grounds is a good starting point on these cars, it can solve a lot of problems. But not a shattered ignition lock

Dan,
Welcome to the Tank.
Ditto on the CE panel - was it same part number ? A big ditto on all ground point cleaning too. This car is a very sensitive electrics monster. Ignition switch is another potential gremlin in this car - will do odd things to other systems if not 'right'. Get the CD of the Workshop manuals and Wiring Diagrams from Roger at 928Rus.com - he is one of our trusted vendors - if you do you own work these will be invaluable to you.
Best Wishes.
Craig

Hi !!

Here's a decent starting point for cleaning those ground points, definitely a must when dealing with the opening shots of an electrical war. De-Oxit spray and some sort of abrasive are a must, getting all the contacts mirror-shiny clean is important.

Also, here's an online version of the factory workshop manuals
http://www.ligeti.com/928/

And here's a super-useful 928 electrics site...

Good luck !

Thanks for the ground points, Dan & Maine.

The starter gets power, just not when the key cylinder is turned. Here is a photo of the cylinder https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByXmL4d28ssRZGVKUEM1V3VySEU/view
I have been turning it with a screwdriver. The spring-action is working fine. When I got the car, the actual cylinder portion just pulled out with the key.

Now, I'm sure the car is in such a state that someone will tell me to just take them both to the junker. I don't want to do that if I don't have to. I've loved the style of the 928 since I was a kid. I loved the hell outta my 924s back in the day.

I was hoping to sell some parts off of the parts car to help fund the project. So far, I've sold the instrument cluster (via Facebook group). I have a website company, so I'm also considering trying to talk to local Porsche shops to see if one needs a kick-*** SEO'd website for partial trade just to get it running.

I will check all of those ground points this evening. Based on the condition of the rear point, they all probably need attention.

Also, thanks for the links so far. I appreciate the help.

Default Thanks. Here's photos and more info.

I just typed out a long reply with a lot of photo links and it's nowhere to be found. I hope I can remember everything...

First, thanks Dan and Maine for the ground points. I'll be checking all of them this evening. Judging from the state of the one at the rear of the car, they all need attention - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0By...1JBczkwalVPNE0

The starter is getting power, just not from the ignition cylinder. I have been turning it with a screwdriver. The start/run return spring seems to be operating fine. When I got the car, the key cylinder just pulled right out of the sleeve. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0By...GVKUEM1V3VySEU

I'm sure someone will tell me I need to just take it to the junker. I can't. I've loved the 928 for a long time and now I have a chance to get one on the road. I'm hoping to sell parts from the parts car to help fund the restoration. I own a website and SEO company, too, so I'm hoping maybe I can find a local Porsche shop who needs a good, SEO'd website and will do a partial trade if necessary to get it running - or at least help me suss some stuff out.

Any help, advice, info, prayers, vibes, etc. accepted.

Thanks, all.

I believe that sensor with the blue wires is the Temp II sensor (Temp I is sensor for water temp to instrument gauge). Sensor II crucial for cold start (and probably other). Function of Temp II sensor can be checked via resistance values at varying temperatures. Check WSM (Workshop Manual) for these.
If the cable you are referring to is that bit of frayed one, I believe it is the cruise control cable.

Add: This could be useful too. http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf...86_KATALOG.pdf

Welcome to the wonderful world of 928 ownership. And congrats on finding this site, which has been incredibly helpful to me in my 45 weeks of 928 ownership. Dan, if you have not already done so, spend some time skimming the New Visitors thread near the top of the index page. There is a ton of great information there. It has helped me when I run into issues to be able to recall that there is something about the issue in that thread.

You're definitely in the the right place.

As recommended above, buy the Jim Morehouse CD Set. Which can be bought here:
http://my-eshop.us/epages/f9b88284-1...Products/JM-CD
And is the best $75 you can spend on this particular car.
It's much, much more than just the Workshop Manuals. Here's more than you'll ever want to know about why.
https://rennlist.com/forums/tags/morehouse.html

I think the CE panel in your car, the .07, is the wrong one, for an '84, and the spare, the .06, is the right one.

A very long thread on the subject by the resident expert with contributions from everybody:

Welcome. I had a similar situation with mine, and found that the PO had installed a push button start switch, which was broken off. Found it after several frustrating days of searching.

Default Big Thanks

Well, I definitely feel like I found the right place here. This was the most active forum I found.

Strikemaster - I don't believe my 83 is a Euro. The 79 is, though. There are some photos linked in a comment above. Neither one of them are much to look at at this point. Here are the vins:
Fogey1 - Mine's an 83... is that 07 CE Panel the right one for 83, or should it still be the 06? Also, what's the difference, or is that something that's been covered over and over again?

The weather didn't let me do any cleaning of the ground points yesterday and today's been occupied with various other things... It's gonna be a slow process.
