Default Block damaged by metal waterpump impeller

This is what I found when I popped the boy's waterpump off today.

Doesn't look too bad. Can you get some closer shots to see how much the impeller took off?

The bottom edge is smooth - not surprising since the impeller was pulled up by the belt - the upper edge has a noticeable edge not unlike a worn disk rotor

Here's a close up.

What kind of water pump was it?

Not that uncommon of a problem, unfortunately.

If needed, Greg Brown stood up a fix for exactly this type of damage.

Best regards,

I think there's a Dwayne write-up of the repair as well.

As mention, GB has a special tool to use for the repair without having to remove the engine.

It's an old factory pump (unless it's counterfeit) since there's a Porsche part number cast into it. In the recess above the pulley there should be a 2 digit date stamp embossed in the metal. How old?

I looked at Dwayne's and his damage looks much worse than mine.

Check the wear with a new pump and clay?

Doesn't look bad enough (from here) to fix. Probably won't affect cooling potential.

Seen similar after removing a newer pump which was installed over previous damage.

Doesn't look took bad. I wouldn't touch it. Add a new pump and all is good. Maybe do an extensive flsh of the cooling system.

+1. I doesn't look like much damage at all. Maybe 1mm at the top and nothing at the bottom.

If that's true, then just get a new pump and go.

The old pump was likely a rebuilt.

IIRC, Roger worked with a Laso to have plastic impellers made and installed in Laso 928 water pumps just because of this problem potential.
