Recommended Batteries
Hi All
So, I am on a cross country trip so to say. And of all things that could suddenly stop working without any previous warning could be the battery, who would of thought its just the battery.
I had thought that the 928 needed a special size. As it so happens, the local Autozone has 2 batteries they say will fit:
AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery, Group Size H6, 760 CCA
(http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/a...gm/10210829-P#)
What batteries are people using? AGM is made by Johnson Controls. Any experience?
Today, I just jumped it twice and kept driving. The charging system is ok registering ca. 13.7 volts. But, it's easier to replace now.

Get the proper fit battery - a Group 48. I would not use anything else. Buy from someone with lots of outlets across the country so if you have an issue while travelling you can get warranty service anywhere.
Wet lead acid is the cheapest option and quite reliable, usually has the most generous warranty terms too. Virtually all car batteries are actually made by Delphi, Exide or Johnson Controls - they are retailed under many different brand names but there aren't many manufacturers. I'd be most inclined to look at Walmart, Costco or O'Reilly/Autozone for broad coverage nationwide...
Keep it simple...

I've been on this forum sooo many times chasing what I thought was an electrical issue with my S4.
My battery always tested as good/would hold a charge and the charging system seemed to be fine - thought I had a bad alternator/drain or something.
Recently bought a Optima Yellow Top from Costco and my car is a completely different vehicle. No more dimming of dash lights when the cooling fans kick in or dropping of volts on the gauge.
Car runs like it should - steady voltage all the time. Love the new battery!!

Local Costco is now carrying Interstate batteries. I don't need one, just looking casually as I was ordering rear tires yesterday. They can get a Group 48/H6 in two to three days but don't normally stock them.
Meanwhile, Wal-Mart carries their own labelled Johnson Controls batteries. After a few go-arounds with Autozone on warranty, I installed one of these. Did a little physical comparison, and found the Wal-Mart is --exactly-- the same case, and weighs the same per my handy bathroom scale. For a little more than 2/3 the current price of the Duralast Gold it was replacing. Wal-Mart has a pretty much 'no questions asked' warranty policy, vs having to teach Autozone clerks about battery technology and how to test them. There are more Wal-Marts than Autozones or Costco's too.
Full Disclosure: I have stock in both Wal-Mart and Costco, so I recommend them first of course.

That's the correct fit for pre-S4 cars. For the S4+ with dual exhaust past the gearbox, the battery box is shortened to make room for the crossover from the right-side pipe to the muffler on the left. There's additional heat shielding there too, between the differential covr and the crossover, and also at the front of the battery box. All force a slightly shorter battery box and a shorter batter to do with it.

It is a tad tall, but if you place the tray that comes with it (that is supposed to go underneath to give it more height) on top, it protects the terminals from touching the battery compartment lid - and the lid holds the battery down.
Some have built lil' bars that attach to the bottom/front of the battery that will sit under the hold down lip in the bottom of the battery compartment.
It is also too short for the 928 battery compartment - I jammed cut portions of pool noodles down where there is space. That battery is not moving!

I have a Duralast (49-DL) from Autozone bought by the PO in May 2008. I have no drains, but do trickle charge it over the winter storage.
Am I running on borrowed time? Or did I just seal my fate with this post?
