Default stripped screw trying to remove Governor

Hello everyone. Today I tried to remove the Governor on a 1989 Porsche 928 S4. The cap and snap ring has been removed. The screw behind the reservoir that you are supposed to loosen would not budge. I tried again today and it split the screw in half. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I would like to fill the transmission with fluid before I get a nasty letter from the HOA again. I noticed the screw is screwed into some kind of nut. I cannot tell if the nut is welded. I was considering trying to turn the nut and remove both nut and screw. Thanks for your help.

you know what, I looked at the manual it says loosen nut, is it possible the center part was some kind of indicator and not meant to be turned?

Governor? Are you sure you're working on a Porsche 928 and not this:?

You are going about this trans work without any planning ahead. Had you, you would've known to release the nut FIRST, then rotate the slotted shaft to adjust the axial support for governor shaft release. Take pictures of the damage.
And again, why are you removing/replacing the governor ??

This slotted shaft that it sounds like you've damaged is the adjusting/releasing shaft for the axial support shaft/pin that lies perpendicular to it (and perpendicular to the to the governor shaft). When rotated properly this adjusting shaft rotates/moves the axial support pin that allows for release of the governor shaft for removal/installation. I'm not sure about the reseating of this shaft if you're considering this. It is likely to be more complicated than it appears. It may be that you have just damaged one of the 'arms' of this slotted shaft that sticks out beyond the releasing nut. Let us know why you want to replace the governor. Hope is not lost. Wait for Greg to advise.

Maineporsche thanks for the reply. I wanted to take the governor out and swap it with a new one. Currently the car will not go into park or reverse after it starts. The manuals say it is the governor

So what your saying is you don't know for sure if I can unscrew the nut all the way and remove both the but and sloted axial part

I am starting to get the feeling I am one of the few people who post about trying someone and digging themselves further into a hole.

That's funny, when I first saw the title of your post--"Stripped screw trying to remove Governor"--I thought it had something to do with New York's former Governor, Elliot Spitzer.

Look on page 4.2/4 of the 722 transmission doc I had attached. Sounds like you broke the 'nose' of the slotted shaft (7). This seating shaft is to be shifted clock or counterclockwise to rotate the axial support shaft (8) of the governor. This shaft (8) probably gets rotated 90 or 180 deg so that the part of this shaft which is cut out will allow the governor shaft rings to be free so it can be extruded.
The big questions are (1) can a replacement seating shaft (7) be obtained and (2) if you were able to get one, how to re-union it with the axial support shaft (8) so all functions as should. This is definitely a Greg Brown question for he has been there often.
Now I'm not sure what is broken on your seating shaft (7). If only one of the slotted arms remain, DON'T BE TEMPTED TO TRY TO ROTATE THIS ARM WITH A NEEDLE NOSE PLIER. If you snap this last vestige off you will then be stuck with a definite dilemma.
This situation is fixable, but wait for Greg with solution advisement.

Add: I had attached the trans doc in your earlier thread when the problem developed.

I am confident the screw did not turn it just slip a little bit like you cut wood with an axe. Can I leave it alone and fill my car back up with transmission fluid?

Only if you're CERTAIN that slotted seating shaft is in the 'locked' position. That would be the slot in horizontal. You can then re-seal and fill.
IF YOU START THE ENGINE AND THE GOVERNOR SHAFT IS NOT 'LOCKED' YOU WILL BE IN FOR A WORLD OF HURT.
Regarding the P and R issues you're having, I would make sure the range selector apparatus is the way it should be. All proper, and all tight. This is the mechanical arm for your gear shifting.

Add: Take some pictures if you can.
