Question Walk, run or dive in?

I found an S4 at a bodyshop. It has been sitting there for god knows how long.
It has right rear 1/4 damage, paint damage, interior water damage, mechanicals unknown.
Is it worth $2k?

Yow. looks like the start of that disturbing scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

'87 Automatic, Euro, no rear air. Paint trashed, interior trashed, mechanicals unknown. Not worth $2K, at least not in American dollars.

Tell the bodyshop guy it's worth more as a parts car and offer him $100 for the (H4) headlights. Then transplant them on whatever car you do buy.

Water damage as in flooded or rain leak?

Jeez, you could have ALOT of money just in getting the body and paint right.

Then there is the inevitable pile of money to fix all the unknowns mechanically.

Just spend the money up front, buy a sorted example and save yourself a bunch of work and regret.

I'd budget $25k to make it right. Is it worth $27k to you?

Its a parts car at best, would be a good buy if you already had one.

the community has spoken. I love a challenge though. I have big ***** after converting a 944 2.7 auto to a complete S2 engine, wiring harness and transmission last summer. I need another project. I guess-timated $3k for the body work if I strip and prep it, $1000 for the interior, another $1000 for mechanicals.
what say y`all...

You got the skillz....I say do it. A driver is one thing. Hunting a project? That changes the game. Gotta keep them alive!

Although I don't know squat about 32 valve cars, I'd say your estimates are a bit low. Actually Kiln's estimate ain"t too far off to get it back to great condition….

You will burn through a $1000 on your first parts order to Roger and not even scratch the surface and who knows what evil lurks under the hood.

Unless you really want to save this particular example and have tons of spare time and spare cash, I would run far away from this one.

1k for interior? It just needs cleaning?

Seriously, your numbers are off. Budget at least 3k for parts for the interior. Not including labour.

for the interior I was thinking of just slapping some leather covers on the seats 4-500 and a dash cover 3-400. Carpets another couple. Heck there is a parts car here I can get for about $2k with a good interior. Why I love Porsche is that they are so robust and DIY friendly. I wouldn`t even consider a Japanese car or American car. I have another option of buying an 86 ROW manual, and take the 87- S4(no ownership) auto parts car and make 86-S4 Manual. Around me there are 6 928s all but abandoned. 2 I get not response from many letters over the years I put on them. A RHD that wont start and the seller wants $5k. the 87 that has no ownership so its a parts car, the black one above and the 86-manual just traded in.
A GTS!!! not touched for 10 years!

87-parts car

Its killing me. I have to save at least 1 of them

I've rescued 944 and 951 also, 928 is much more like 951 in terms of critical parts that must be replaced with new for basic functionality. Expect parts budget to be 5, not 1
Otherwise, good to go!
