Default FS: 1979 Porsche 928 5-speed Transmission & Torque Tube

Just did a Z06 6-speed Transmission conversion in my 1979 Porsche 928 Spyder so I no longer have a need for the OEM 5-speed Transmission or Torque Tube. Both were used during the drive from SC to WI last week - about 875 miles, which went fine, so they're in working condition

This is my first 928 so I'm not sure how the transmissions are supposed to shift, but this one needs a brief pause in neutral on it's way to the next higher gear and needs to be double-clutched during the downshifts from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd to avoid any gear grinding. I believe some of this is because of the heavy brass synchro rings that are in these transmissions, but am not sure if this is normal or due to wear on this particular gearbox. It is an LSD version. The transmission stays engaged in all the gears without popping out of any and drives very well once a gear is engaged. The Torque Tube also seems fine as there was not any driveline vibration up to 100 MPH.

As the 5-speed transaxles are becomming a bit rare, I'm looking to get $1,750 for the pair plus freight. If anyone is working on an OB restoration with a 5 speed then these might be of interest to you. Sale includes the linkage, but not the shift couplers, nor the clutch.

Let me know if you're interested. Photos are available in this thread from the transmission swap (posts 26 & 31).

Shipment will be made from Horicon, WI 53032 via Common Carrier on a skid or via FedEx Freight, if you're looking to estimate shipping costs to you or can be picked-up. I'm looking to move these quickly so open to offers.

Thanks. You can PM me here or send an e-mail to petza914@gmail.com.

Hope you enjoy the 6-speed. I've been thinking about going that route myself. How did you locate the 6-speed? Can I ask the price range you paid for it? What was your experience with the company that did the conversion (time, communication, etc)? You can always message me if you are not comfortable with any information going out public. Thanks.

I bought the trans, torque tube, linkage, shifter box etc from Dino's Corvette dealing with the owner, Dino Behler. I found them through a web search of Corvette dismantlers. He was great to deal with. They actually shipped a non-Z06 torque tube by accident initially and didn't have one in stock, but he sourced the proper one from another dismantler to honor our deal and arranged for pick-up of the incorrect one. Although I purchased everything in January, I knew it wouldn't be installing until this week so he also agreed to delay the start of the 30 day warranty until it was actually installed, simply asking for some dated photos of the install to start the warranty clock.

Total price for all the necessary outsourced pieces was around $3,000. Then there was the cost of Carl's 5-speed to 6-speed conversion, kit which is on their website, and I actually am having him install it this week so there was a labor component as well.

It's just going in now so I don't have any driving impressions yet and also can't yet verify that all the parts from Dino were as represented, but based on the look of them and Carl's preliminary inspection am not expecting any surprises.

I can post an update over the weekend as I start the return trip home tomorrow evening.

Trans & Torque Tube are still available. I failed to mention that these have a new shifter ball cup and Carl's precision rear shift coupler. Here's an additional photo.
