Default Oxygen sensor connector

While checking the connection on my O2 sensor in the CE panel, I discovered the white connector that goes up up behind the CE panel is completely disintegrated.

The white plastic literally came apart in my hands and exposed the wire. Can this plastic piece be replaced or can it be spliced?

I noticed an inner sheathed wire with additional wires around the inner sheath.

After looking at the wire a little further, could you directly connect the outer wire of the O2 engine harness wire to the O2 sensor wire. Then splice the inner wire via a male female blade connector to the O2 sensor wire.

That seems how they connect within the plastic connector. Both of the O2 engine harness wires are connected to the single O2 sensor wire, but they are insulated from each other.

Is the outer wire a ground or a different input than the inner wire?

BTW, I tested the O2 sensor by hooking up a MM to measure voltage when warm. I have read that it should be from 0-1 volts. Mine started off around 1 volt and steadily rise to almost 3 volts.

Faulty O2 sensor?

In case anyone cares about fixing a broken O2 sensor connector, you can splice them and it works fine.

I took the male connector from the broken white engine harness connector and soldered the center wire of the bundle to that.

I twisted the surrounding wire from around the center wire into a bundle, heat shrinked it and connected that to the female connector coming off the O2 sensor line.

That way, the center wire and surrounding wire do not touch, but still are in contact with the O2 sensor single wire.

Combined with turning up the mixture on the AFM 3/4 a turn clockwise and advancing the timing to 26 degrees and all running problems seemed to have disappeared.

Idle is rock steady and the car pulls very nicely through 6000 rpms with no hesitation at all.

Even the MPG gauge seems more accurate now.

Could a shorting out O2 sensor wire have caused some of these issues?

I don't know if the mixture is in the right range, but I'm leaving well enough alone for now.

I would have bet it was the AFM going bad, especially since the resistance values were way off and the wiper track was very worn.
