Stranded in Van Horn, Texas

The grand canyon was great. We did a helicopter tour, then went into the park and walked the rim. After that did meteor crator, Carlsbad caverns, and this morning snorkeling at the huge spring fed swimming hole at Balmorhea state park. We've been driving into the tropical storm, 30-40mph winds and heavy rain and finally had to pull over in a gas station where we now sit about 50 miles from home. The gas station just lost power... One final adventure...

Don glad your trip is going great,
now that your almost home,
just stay out of the puddles a leaking air duct could suck water into your alternator,

I've been enjoying reading your adventures, Don. Reminds me a lot of mine last Christmas. Very glad you and your son are nearly home, with TS Bill yet another chapter in what will be a lifetime memory for the two of you.

Wrap Up
Since so many were following along with our “Stranded” thread, I thought I would post some favorite pics from the trip. I wish I had taken pics at the dinner with Dan, Alan and Rick, but I totally forgot.
Thanks to all that helped with ideas as to what the problem was. Also, a big thanks to Roger who did a lot of leg work trying to track down a fuel pump for us that I didn’t end up needing since the mechanic in Phoenix had one in stock. It’s great to know we have that kind of support when we take our 928’s on long trips. And Sean for taking my call to bounce some ideas around.
Overall the trip was a blast with lots of great memories and the car amazed me with its comfort and it’s room for all our stuff including camping equipment. This was the first time I have sat in the passenger seat for more than a few minutes, and with the seat way back, it was extremely comfortable and roomy. It’s a great way to travel long distances. It was also the first time to drive a 928 above an elevation of a few hundred feet and I was amazed how much power it lost at 6000-7500 feet. I've owned the car 20 years and this was the first road trip farther than Marble Falls.
Also, as promised, here's the video of the noise the FP was making shortly after it failed.
Anyway, some pics…
Room for lots of stuff, didn't even have to remove the sub
Before leaving the house

Don, great pictures and memories have been created,
thanks for taking us along.
the funny thing is how much you can stuff into a 928,
the next thing is,
how many rooms and boxes you can fill when take out the interior .
Your car looks great, and your son got a great vacation,
complete with lessons on how to be a mechanic.
The pump video , I have never heard a pump make that kind of noise

Pump sounds like it is sucking vapor. Note how it --speeds up-- then slows again as it starts pumping liquid again.

Is it possible for the feed hose to the pump to have a leak, sucking in air but small enough the tank pressure doesn't leak fuel out?
I've seen this happen with the suction side of power steering hoses. Leaking just enough to cause a very odd noise of air sucking in and the pump cavitating, but never leaks.

I just uploaded a video compiled from the trip. It's not really complete, but I probably won't find time to do any more work on it. The music is by Steven Wilson who was the guy we went to see in concert in Mesa.
Warning: it's over 20 minutes long and has some frightening shots of a very white, slightly overweight, 50+ male underwater.
(Not sure if the embedded YT is working, so here's the link)
