Default WTB 928 for a Driver

Hello,
I'm interested in a 928 that is in very nice condition, that has been fully sorted and set up as a great driver. Modifications are fine as long as the car is California smog legal. Southern California cars would be a plus. All colors considered. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

I would like to be under $20k, and it would be my first 928, so any advice would be appreciated. I'm not opposed to auto, so the wife could drive it too. Colors, I'm open to. I like all the models looks, but I think the most modern car would be better for advancements. I want to use it as a GT car, not a stark sports car.

You'll be fine in that price range. These cars can be had in good cond for 8-20k. Although I prefer the stick, the auto trans in the 928 is most excellent. Good wife cars too.

Very good wife cars. In 20 minutes, it gave my mom road rage and a lead foot

Now your wife won't have an excuse for being late anymore if she does drive it.

With your price range, almost anything is possible to get as a lot of very nice cars hover around $12K to $15K on the SoCal market.

Very, very FEW 928s could be considered "fully sorted" they typically have a few years of not being kept up before they are actually put up for sale. You should expect and plan for a few thousand dollars (up to many ) of repairs to make it a reasonably reliable car....not a new car, not perfect but reasonably reliable. They are now old cars, the wiring is old, the hoses and belts old, suspension is old..... Replacement parts are expensive and if you do not do your own labor it adds up very quickly !
Yes it is a Porsche but a 20-30 years old Porsche where because of the low resale values and the high repair costs tended to get neglected as many people bought them BECAUSE they were "cheap" and guess what one visit to a Porsche repair shop was all it took for them to start "fixing it themselves" or simply ignoring the issues altogether.
Most need $2,000-3,000 a year to keep them running and everything functional, defer that for 4-5 years and you can see what it easily takes to try TRY to catch up.... My old very brown $2,000 1980 sucked up about $8,000 dollars not long ago (transmission clutch torque tube motor mounts oil pan gasket etc.) and it is still a $2,000 car on a good day
But after 15 years of owning that car and beating it up at the track I am quite O K with that Now just need to put in a new battery as it has not been started for 6 months ! Oh yea and the drivers window will not roll up, thank goodness for garbage bags as it sits outside all the time.

I think every buyer's dream is to find that perfectly maintained already-sorted SoCal climate-controlled-garage-kept low-mileage example. Pretty much the Holy Grail of 928's or any other interesting car. I'm trying to keep my car in that condition, but folks who do that tend not to want to let them go.

Seems to me that most cars that show up in the market are there because they need a list of things that are beyond what the seller considered reasonable within the current market value of the cars. With that in mind, I casually budget an additional $5k for all the rubber and suspension/brakes/battery replacement parts costs that are needed to make a newly-acquired 928 a safe driver.

Good luck with the search!

Well stated Dr Bob and you have seen first hand many 928s as you so kindly have helped people do various repairs on their cars. So you KNOW how neglected many of these cars really are...yes they might run and drive but .......
My view point is admittedly somewhat tainted by all those years talking to owners about their cars hearing horror stories about botched "professional" repairs and literally selling them millions of dollars of parts. Perhaps like a receptionist at a doctor's office who might think nearly everyone is sick Few people ever called just to tell me how great their 928 was running !

Be opposed to the auto for the wife. I bought 2 with Auto so the wife could drive it...then she had no interest.

Check out the brown 87 auto on Houston CL. I've seen it and driven it and it's a very nice car. Needs a few things, but generally very nice. I have more pics if you are interested. A lady owner is trying to sell. She got in over her head and would probably take around 10k for it. (nothing in it for me)

Thanks for all the input guys. I've always admired the 928 and the 944, so I'm looking at both. Since it is to be a driver for 40 miles each day, I think the GT cruiser style of the 928 will suit me best. I will check out the brown car in Houston, but I was hoping to find something local. As far as budgeting money for the first years ownership, I've owned a 348, and 355 Ferrari, so I know all about budgeting large sums of money for initial repairs! I really appreciate everyone's advice...Cheers Steve

You are not a newby to performance cars, but you may still want to read the new visitor thread. Also sounds like you may avoid some initial maint, but you will eventually need a mechanic? Greg Brown is in Anaheim, he is the recognized guy in that area. 714-eight seven nine-9072. Dealer shops that know the 928 are rare, if any.
