Default 928 instrument cluster update??

Hello all,
I'd consider myself new to the 928 world even though I had a 928S4 back in 2000. I love the car. After all the years I finally bought one another one, a 91GT this time. The new car is great I just got it painted and it turned out beautiful. I upgraded the steering wheel to a 996 wheel and just today bought beautiful hardback seats to put in. I will also update the car with a pioneer nav that I already have.
The one thing that looks so dated is the instrument cluster. I honestly dislike it. The 88 had at least the round gauges and Jageng had rings for it which I had that made a big difference. After searching online I found northing for the newer models but I am thinking there must be something out there. Any ideas? Couldn't someone make something a little more modern?
If there is nothing out there already maybe we can group together and have someone design something..

Thoughts?
Thank you

Thanks for the reply. Has anyone done it for 928 yet? I do want it to look more modern but I do not want a freak show either.

Are you looking for a cosmetic overlay for the existing cluster, or a replacement display? If the latter, I can't imagine the amount of work it would take to adapt any sort of aftermarket display to the mostly point-to point wiring that plugs into the back of the '91 gauge cluster. There are 65 separate connections in 4 connectors:

Carls sells a dash insert that talks to an aftermarket ECU setup he also sells, but I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for, but maybe (?)

Porsche is one of the top design firms in the world, and that can be painfully obvious when attempting any changes to the 928, most just don't look right.

What I would suggest is working on paper, or PC, come up with a design and features you like, print it on a sheet of paper full size, cut to fit the pod and see how it looks in the pod.

Interesting how tastes vary- I would say the display on the digi dash panels is about as good as it gets on any car-period- and like most of the 928 design it is timeless.

Fully respect the OP's point of view of course - I rather suspect it will be a difficult struggle but good luck with the effort.

Regards

Fred

sounds like he wants an overlay......as that is what his early S-4 had in 2000.

Even an overlay would be nice if we could have some sort of metal bezels or something. I know jageng makes these below for the pre 88 but othing on the never models.

BUT,
tell me if one there wouldn't look good on the 928. I am sure it would take crazy amout of work and $$ and it's not feasible.

When I see those installed they always look like an "add-on", like they don't really belong.

Not really, doesn't fit the flow of the interior.

If you were looking for a complete revamp of the interior to be modeled after a modern 991 or Panamera, that would be cool. But just doing the gauge cluster is like going in for a boob job and only enhancing one breast. It's an all or nothing package or it just doesn't look right.

You are actually right, 100%. To change the instrument cluster that much would be a boob job
I bought real nice hardback seats, have a very nice nav systemm and would love some upgrade on the cluster. Nothing too wild as would cost $$$$. Nice bezels at least. I do plan to re-leather the interior in the future with some nice sticting.

Its been done - there's an aussie user here with the 996 dash cluster installed in his 928.

He also has digital HVAC controls (from a VW IIRC). I'll see if I can dig up his posts about it.

User is svpmx83.
