So I purchased a 1983 928S the Other day

I want to introduce myself and say that I am now the proud owner of a black/black 1983 Porsche 928S auto. I purchased the car for my 14yo daughter to be used as her daily driver when she turns 16. I bought the car from a good buddy of mine for $2K and the car is in decent shape considering its age, but does need some TLC to bring it back to daily driver status. The car runs and drives great so for that I am happy.

As a background I am an engineer and have been fabricating and tuning cars for 16 years primarily focused on turbocharged import applications. My daily driver is a 2006 EVO IX that puts 576hp@wheels and my weekend car is a 2009 GTR that is also modified. My intent is to go through the car and fix all the little things that need attention and I will be doing all the work myself. Looking forward to being a part of the forum. I will be updating this thread as I make progress on the car.

Beautiful looking car and you have one lucky daughter. Best of luck with the car. I like those wheels too. Welcome to Rennlist. There area great bunch of people on here with a wealth of information and support. Some great vendors too, who will have answers and parts for just about any repair.

thank you for the response and I am sure I will be seeking help as I move forward. The first task was to address the trunk lid that would not stay closed and can be opened just by pulling up. I tried to adjust the upper and lower mechanisms, which did make a difference. However, the issue is a worn upper lock piece (white plastic catch) as well as a missing hatch receiver cushion stopper insert. I ordered both parts online so they should arrive in the next week.

Tomorrow I will put the car on jack stands to take a look at the suspension and brakes. The plan for the brakes is just to make sure everything looks good and I will install stainless brake lines. Regarding the suspension, I will check for any worn bushings and replace with urethane if needed.

Welcome! Looks like a nice car and a super deal.

A couple of minor items:
You need a plastic cover and acorn nut on the jump start terminal on the right fender panel.
Check to make sure that both E-clips are firmly in place on the connections for the headlight operating bar, so that the bar can't come loose on either end. A loose bar can penetrate the AC condenser and/or radiator.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. One of the first things to do is to get a set of the Morehouse CDs - all of the factory workshop manuals, wiring diagrams, changes by years, etc., etc. The best money that you will ever spend on the car.

I would say yours is a bit cleaner than mine. I have not taken time to clean the car, but that is definitely something on the to do list once I complete the major maintenance work.

I was going to inspect the suspension and brakes today, but spent some time going through the car to figure out everything that needed attention. The list includes passenger seat controls, mirror controls, intermittent headlights, dash dimmer, windshield washer fluid, intermittent speedometer, sticky windows, sticking moon roof, and a few other small issues. I also noticed the power steering high pressure hose was leaking so I ordered new high/low pressure hoses.

Regarding the rims, I am not sure of the manufacturer, but i do like the look as opposed to the standard 928S rims that come with the car.

You have 1 lucky daughter. I had to buy my own 928 when I was 15. It looks like a great place to start, just be sure you replace all fuel lines, especially the little ones that go to each injector.

And all other soft lines in the engine compartment like the power steering pressure, the auto cooler lines, and the oil cooler lines.

Don't mean to scare you, just want to warn you of some commonly overlooked items.

But most of all, have fun, the 928 is a journey worth taking.

For your daughter, yeah, sure. After you do this thing for two years, she will be getting a 240Z, I bet.

Check out the New Visitor thread for 4 pages of useful information and links.

Second on the fuel lines. The suppliers here that know these cars are 928 International in LA; 928srus in TX; and 928GT (Dave Roberts) in NC. I think they are all in the vendor list of RL.

I promise that she will get the car contingent on the insurance being reasonable for a 16yo. I will be building a 240Z for my son who is now 11, but that is 4-5 years down the road. I have the GTR as my play car and a 600+hp EVO as my daily driver so I am content for now.

Thank you for the heads up regarding the fuel lines and for letting me know who to contact should I need parts and assistance. I have also added the fuel lines on the to do list so thank you for the input.

I tackled the sun roof today and spent about 5hrs taking it apart and putting back together. There was a very useful link I found documenting the "MOST Common 928 Issues AND Fixed," which includes a thread for "Sunroof non-op."

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ues-fixes.html

I used this as a starting point, but took it a step further and removed the aluminum track so I could thoroughly clean and lubricate. After you remove the sunroof per the article there are three phillips head screws on the top of each track that secure it to the car. Once the three screws are removed you pull up on the track to overcome the sealant used on the side of the track. Do this on both sides and then slide forward and remove the large sliding bar that secures the sunroof. At this point you can just pull the track towards the front of the car to remove. Below are pics of the track removed.

After they are both removed I starting the cleaning process. I used brake cleaner and rags to get most of the junk off then I cleaned using a blue scotch brite pads (for dishes) and soap in the sink. Below is a picture of one clean and one fresh off the car.

As previously stated the rails had sealant on the sides so I used 3M Strip Caulk to reseal the sides. This product does not dry so it remains plyable in case you need to remove again.

With the car on and full voltage the roof opens and closes like new, but with the car off it somewhat struggles when it pushes up the back right before final close. I do see where it is somewhat rubbing right before final close so I will make a small modification tomorrow to address the issue.

If I were to do it again I would remove the gear drive as shown below, which will allow you to completely remove the cable to clean and apply fresh lubricant.

Unfortunately, when I reinstalled the headliner to the sunroof it was enough to affect its ability to close. I decided to pull it back apart and pull the cables completely out of the track. It is fair to say the cables were covered in a hardened grease and the driver's side was difficult to remove due to buildup.

I attached the end of the cable to my cordless drill and had my 14yo daughter turn the drill while I ran the threads through a rag soaked in brake cleaner. After a few passes the threaded cable was completely clean and I repeated for the other cable. I then applied a liberal amount of black super lithium grease and inserted back into the track. I then put everything back together minus the headliner to check the operation.

Cleaning the cables made a significant difference and the roof would easily close with the car off. I then noticed a slight problem on the driver's side with the wing tab slightly rubbing as it passed through the slot in the track. Kind of hard to explain, but the pic below is what I am referring. This wing tab keeps the back of the roof down until it is closed and then allows the back to push up. There is a phillips screw just above the tab that allows you to center the wing tap directly in the center of the track opening.

I put back the headliner and the sunroof works perfectly with the car running so I have called it a night.

Yipes, a working sunroof, did not know that was possible.

James Bailey 12-31-2014 01:41 PM

or even desirable :)

I assume this is sarcasm. I did one last fix and lubed the underside of the track as this is where the wing tab rides when the sunroof is being closed. I wondered why it was slower to close than to open and it is because the wing tab is being pushed up against the underside of the track as it closes. The sunroof now completely closes with the car off.
