Default Car can only go in reverse? 82 auto US on CL

I am still in search of my 928 and I saw this on craigslist. Is this "only goes into a reverse" a common thing? Is it indicative of major problems, or possibly a more simpler adjustment.

I think I'd give this one a pass and keep looking. Or, maybe get it cheap and put a used transmission in it from 928 International (Half price sale on used parts going on now). You will find so many other things that need work. It can become discouraging when after a few weeks/months you find still more things that need to be replaced or repaired. No need to start out with a fairly significant transmission repair -- unless you get the car VERY cheap and you're a good DIY mechanic.

A little far away for me.

It is most likely the B2 piston that has snapped inside the auto trans.
That is what happened to my 84 Auto many many years ago.
It was back in the days when all we had was the email list.
It generated big discussion on whether trans needed to be dropped.
I replaced it (on my back underneath) with the trans in the car.
There is a small round access cover on the side of the transmission.
The part was reasonably priced, but the task was pretty tricky.
I had to make (heat/bend/reshape) a couple of special tools.
I posted a write-up back at the time. I'll see if it's in my archives...

Does the passenger fender look like a different color than the hood to any one else? Looks nice inside. Not sure if the spare tire in the hatch is a good sign.

I live in N. Jersey, any more info about where it is?

Captain_slow, you might be right I am interested in knowing more about it but will proceed with caution.

MarkR Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if am closer to getting it and perhaps take you up on the offer to get the procedure you have done.

Mikeinbloomfield, it's hard to tell about the fender between the uneven lighting and the fact the photos seem to have been instagramed ..is that a word? and yeah! the tire scares me a bit.

I am waiting to get more/better pictures and talk to him on the phone. Only texted so far. we'll see.

I might be able to take a drive down there and take more pics if you're still interested.
