91 S4 Instrument Panel Face is delaminating
I pulled the instrument panel from a 91 S4 I imported from Nevada and upon inspection it looks like the top layer is delaminating. I have never seen this before. Is there something I can do or do I need to source a replacement?

I've seen it once on a rather low mile GTS (mileage was not accurate) and know of no way to fix it. I'd try and contact someone at VDO and see if they can refresh it.

Or maybe North Hollywood speedometer (?)

How much were the importation fees from Nevada? I hope the Federalization process isn't too painful.

I've followed this problem of the film on the face of the cluster delaminating for a few years. I've only seen it on 90' & 91' 928s & 911s. My '91 has it; just got a replacement cluster housing this week from 928 Int. I don't know of any other way to fix it but to replace the housing. Its just cosmetic, no effect on the operation of any of the gauges but it just doesn't look too great.

It sure would be interesting if this was just an issue with the early digi clusters and was fixed on '92 forward. It would explain how a GTS with only 12k miles looked like it had a real rough 100k on it. Early cluster swapped in for the high mile one.

I used to look at pics of '90-91' 928s & 911s for sale online to see if I could tell if they had this problem. Even kept a folder with the pics of other cars with the same issue. Saw it in one 911 & multiple 928s. I have asked many 928 Gurus & none said they've ever seen it.

Mine does not have the issue. But then again, it's rarely exposed to extreme temperatures.
Another place to contact would be Palo Alto Speedometer: http://www.paspeedo.com

I kind of wondered if it was caused by a leaking/loose fitting somewhere in the big HVAC hose that was blowing air (hot, cold, moist) into the pod area.

Just checked a picture of mine when I got it two years ago and no delamination. I'll pull back the car cover this weekend ( snowing right now ) to see if there is any. My car also has not seen a lot of temp fluctuations and is low mileage. Mine was an early 1991 build # 127.

I wish someone would make some color face inlays for this type of cluster like they have for the pre-89 style with some nice rings.
Even better a whole new instruments layout copied from the newer Porsches.
I would buy.
