Default Ignition switch

Can anyone get me a link or describe exactly how to remove the mechanical portion of the ignition switch, and repair / replace? Mine will not turn the electrical switch for starting. 928 I has the replacement shaft, but I have no clue how to get the key assembly out...looked for some write ups...found none.....anyone help?

Thanks.

AND

Look very carefully and see if you can find the head of a small pin driven into the housing. This is what holds the cylinder in place.

If you are junking the cylinder, you can drive the pin into the cylinder.

If you want to reuse the cylinder, take a sharp hacksaw blade and cut a shallow groove next to the pin so that you can pry the pin out using a sharp tool.

While you have solved your immediate problem with the new ignition - how do you plan to lock the doors? How to open the hatch? Having the original key is really an advantage.

Ok...thank you Brian. I have the key, and do not want to destroy the lock assembly. I just need to replace the rod assembly/components inside, that actually turn the electric switch....I hope is do-able....should be, since 928I has the part.

Extremely helpful writeup....I need to print this one out.....think I will try to dremel down part of th ring around the pin, and then just pull her out!

I will post the results in my #30 thread, good or bad....

Does anyone have any input or tips on replacing this part?

I got it from 928i..

It is longer than my original, which is why, I assume there is an "extension" ring with the kit. My problem was the rod would not turn the ignition switch. I have already disassembled, and all the parts in the lock housing seem fine.

This rod has a spring and plastic cam on the end...my spring seemed very compressed, but very strong, so I stretched it back out, and reassembled the cam and spring on the new rod. ( sorry no pic at the moment).

I will be putting it all back together this week, just can't quite grasp how it works, or why mine didn't. Any input would be great to help me understand this mechanism.

Thanks
