Thanks for all the offers. I will be working on pulling the motor today to find out what happened. Pretty sure I need a whole new short block.

So... just to fill you all in. As you may remember this Spring while running at VIR, the car decided to eat the 1-5 bearings. The crank and rods were toast. Luckily, I had purchased a used motor from Anderson during his sale. However, when I opened that used motor, Cyl#2 was fvcked. It had coolant sitting in it for possibly years and had eaten away at the cyl walls. In talking with Mark, we decided to make a Fraken-motor between the two. Use the block from the Coke car and the rotating assembly from the donor motor.

I checked bearing clearances and everything looked like it was a go. So I built it up with new rings, etc.

Upon initial startup, it had a bad ticky ticky. It sounded like a lifter that hadn't pumped up fully. I took it down to the gas station got some gas, but noticed the cheap Chinese injectors I bought sucked (I thought it was worth the gamble, but save yourself the money and just get the Bosch ones)! Got some decent Bosch ones and "tuned" the MAF. This was my first voyage after that. Looks liek I only took it up to about 4500 or 5000 RPM when something let loose. The motor will not turn.

My bet is a connecting rod, but that's just a guess. Motor has to come out. will fill you in on details as they emerge. SHould be juicy.

That's impressive- split cylinder that hydraulically fractured the block, or rod off the piston doing the weedwhacker routine?

Ouch!

Methinks that mayhaps, perchance you are not fixing that with JB Weld, Duct Tape or Bailing Wire...

Cant wait to see the carnage **** and your next build!

Suggestion/Inspiration...

Sorry I fell of the face of the earth again. But that blowup really set me back. Still not 100% sure what the cause was. Basically Cyl #2 went Kaboom. Whether it was a connecting rod, the piston, or something else, I have no idea. Basically the whole this went to **** in about 1/10 of a second.

All I could do was laugh. I started the teardown pretty much immediately' Here's what I found:

There was coolant in the throttle plenum.

The V is cracked at Cyl#2! Youwza!

Bent valves! Duh!

Where is the piston?

Way DOWN THERE!

Oh... there's some.

The windage tray was littered with tiny pieces of piston.

So... That was very traumatic! I was just about to throw in the towel when DaveK9 came across this car (i guess it had been posted here previously). The plan was that we would split the cost. I would get the motor, and he would get everything else. I drove out to Chicago and picked it up. It was a bit tricky getting it home. I got a flat about 40mi from home. I decided to roll the dice and used the inflatable spare that came in the Cayenne. Made it home like a champ!

Then I started taking things apart. Took about 4 hours to get the car off the trailer, motor out, and car back on the trailer.

The donor car was a 1985 5-speed which had the "5-speed" part removed along with rear suspension.

Loading it on the trailer was a challenge.

Plucked the new donor motor in just a few hours.

Why is that mice always like to makes nests in the V's! Luckily it looked like they didn't try to eat any of the wires. At this point I went to Japan for a week with my daughter. I went to the Toyota Museum. I wish it was more about Toyota cars rather than general automotive history. But there were a few tasty cars there. When I got back, I pulled the intake off and the front of the motor. The heads had clearly been "touched" as there here deck-height measurements hand scribed here and there. The plan was to leave the heads on and just "freshen" things up. So that's what I did. Transferred the PKensioner, and new cam gears over. New-ish belt, and the previous intake. Presto! Car was ready to go!

ReallY?

That 2000GT has aged so well! Beautiful!

Almost there! (And yes I know the caps are reversed.)

It's in the hole!

Ready for AO ACTION!

I have driven it about 50 miles so far. This motor seems to have more power than the original one that I had. Runs very smooth. A bit rich upstairs (getting into the 9's) but I can deal with that. Had a couple of drips around the oil pan. re-snugged bolts, so hopefully that will go away. All-in-all I'm very happy. Planning a track day in August to see how she does. Just need to change the oil over to Amsoil and let her rip! Fingers crossed.

Nice going, you sure did turn it around relativity quickly

I still need to get that chassis off my trailer, I did strip the ECU's CE and a other tasty bits, going to reuse that '86 chassis as a DE car, have all the running gear from "a running" body damaged '85 manual w/ LSD I picked up from DOC last year
And rich is better than lean, although 9 AFR is a bit high even at WOT
