(This is for my '86.5)

I'm reasonably certain my motor mounts are shot, so at some point (not a huge priority, but I'm bored) I will need to replace them. I know the original Porsche mounts are $$$, and there is a Volvo mount that is (I think?) also a hydraulic-style mount, that is reasonable and works.

Anyone have any experience with these solid rubber mounts on Ebay? They're cheap, and I know some folks prefer solid mounts.

I just noticed that these appear to be from 928 Motorsports. So the question really turns into pros/cons of these mounts vs the Volvo mounts, solid vs hydraulic. I'm sure the solid mounts transmit a bit more vibration, but is it that noticeable?

Carl is still selling the Anchor Ford mount and I stopped installing those a few years ago due to having to warranty failed units. You can't tell what you are getting because the "solid" might just be a non water filled one that will collapse in a few weeks. Quality control went to crap when the production went from India to China. One set might be a water filled set, one set might have one solid and one water filled and you could actually get two solids. Not worth taking that chance.

I got the Volvo mounts from Roger. He does the prep work on them for you (grinds off a pin, maybe??).

Not expensive at all. Seem to work fine. Dwayne's writeup on changing them is very, very, very helpful.

The advice that I received was to stick to the OEM ones. It's a lot of work to fit them, so I wouldn't personally be looking for the cheapest option.

Why not use the Porsche mounts? They fit correctly, they last at least 10 years, and they are
not $300 each.

The stock mounts work best, and make you feel good.

That is not true and has never been true. Our rubber mounts are made in India still, not China. Have been selling and installing them for about 8 years now - no claims, no failures. Zero. None.

I've seen the threads from those that have bought their "Ford Motor Mounts" at Rock Auto, and all I can say is you get what you pay for.

We also have billet aluminum mounts for those that want them.

At that price they should have lasted more than the 3 years they did on a customers car, he wasn't very happy.

Well that's a relief to hear, did they start remaking them again in India after all the hoopla? I'm sure you were around when the failures started and I highly doubt you have some mysterious supplier that the rest of us don't know about.

I don't think he's saying he replaced them. He was asking for opinions on your mounts. If I am wrong and you have a supplier that the rest of us don't have access to, and my information is wrong. My bad.

Once Corteco (OEM to Ford) changed manufacturing base a few years ago the solid Ford motor mounts started to fail. They made them in solid and hydraulic (hollow filled with water and a little antifreeze) and used the same part number. Consequently they supplied the hydraulic without filling them with water and sure enough they collapsed when you put the engine weight on them. So we stopped selling the Ford Ranger specified solids about 4 years ago now - that is what Carl currently sells as solid - although what manufacturer he uses - there are many - is his business. Many years ago Ray Wach came up with the idea of using the Ford Ranger solid mounts back when they were good quality maybe 12 years or more past.

The Volvo mounts have been used for many years by the UK 928 group and that is where I got the idea from once the solids started to fail - failures well documented on Rennlist. Many years of experience with Volvo MM's and zero issues. I also researched the quality and warranty returns through the main warehouses and also Volvo dealers - very positive results with very low failure rates.

Lots of different views about the Porsche MM's. In all my experience every one I have ever removed for a 928 has been collapsed. Seen a number fail in a relatively short period of time. However listen to Greg Brown and he will only fit Porsche MM's and has never seen one fail.

I probably sell between 300 & 500 sets of Volvo mounts every year versus two sets of Porsche mounts. Zero issues and zero failures with the Volvo MM's.

You pays your money and takes your choice. My Volvo MM's are $56 each and come prepped with the correct hardware and as always I stand by my products.

I have the tutorial for fitting the Volvo MM's prepared by Mr. Merlin and as already said Dwayne has an excellent write up as well. Dwayne and Mr. Merlin you can't get a better recommendation than that in my book

Support your 928 suppliers and not Porsche dealers - Porsche dealers could not give a crap about 928 parts and the future supply. And that from someone who just enjoyed Mark's hospitality. And I am pretty sure Circle Porsche is not a sponsor of Rennlist either - double bad in my book!!!

928 International, 928 Specialists and 928 MS are there for the owners and CARE about the 928 as do myself and my company

My plan since I've been reading the forum have been to most likely go with the Volvo mounts, I just saw the solid ones and thought maybe they'd be better.

Carl, I haven't replaced anything yet...my comment was that I noticed that the Ebay ad I linked was (or appeared to be) 928Motorsports mounts, based on the pics. I have no knowledge one way or the other about any failures, other than that I'm betting that mine (original Porsche mounts, as far as I know) are goners. It's not super high on my list of things to do, but it's definitely on there.

I'm glad this thread was started as I have to do mounts on my 87 S4 once paint is done. Looks like I will be going with Roger's Volvo mounts. Roger what is the highest mileage you have seen put on these mounts? Just curious.

I have had excellent transactions with 928 International, 928 Specialists, and 928's RU's. These establishments are run by stand up guys who stand BEHIND their products.

Yeah, Dan. I have also had excellent transactions with these suppliers. I've only been doing business with 928 International for about 26 years now. I would also assume they are "stand up guys" who love these cars that Porsche made and stand behind what they do. Since the car I have is also one made by Porsche, from time to time, I will buy a part from Porsche to put on my Porsche. I may even share my opinion about the cars, the parts, or try to help people on the forum if I think I can.

It seems odd, in my opinion, and I may be in error here, that a supplier would intentionally criticize a previous customer on an international forum for wanting to buy a Porsche part, from Porsche, to install on his Porsche. Maybe that is a new marketing technique that I haven't heard about yet, but I sure hope the other "stand up guys" don't start thinking that is a good practice for encouraging your customers to want to do more business with your company. I'm pretty sure Marc and Carl, and even Greg, don't treat their customers that way. That shows me that they actually do care about the cars, and the customers, and they seem to be doing ok without telling people not to buy anything from Porsche, the people who made the car. They seem like stand up guys, to me.

Again, just my opinion.
