I just went and watched it. Nice looking car, chromed phone dials. Looked to be off white, or "cream" as the announcers said. Was there a Chiffon white in 81? They did not show the interior or engine. Made quick work of it.
They are still as ignorant as ever on these cars. Bill Stevens made some sort of comment that having the engine in the front was "short-lived" and another said it was an "experiment".
Whatever, I don't think a model that runs for that long qualifies for either of those things, but they don't get these cars.

Chiffon white was a color available in 81. I know this because my 81 was this color before a PO painted it black.
They really do not know these cars, the 924 was more experimental than the 928 ever was with the numerous racers and test mules for the 944.
The 928 definitely was not a short lived car, 18 years is a pretty good run for a limited production car.
Some people just shouldn't comment on something they know nothing about.

The car is gorgeous worth every penny.

Here's a question for the group: this car is obviously a "time capsule" in that it's been driven very little. The body appears in pristine shape (hopefully the interior as well). Would it best to just keep the car "as is" and drive it sparingly and hope it appreciates or spend 5-7K taking care of deferred maintainance and then drive it 3 - 4 K miles/year?

I'm the lucky guy who bought this car. It is chiffon white and has a dark brown leather interior. All in close to showroom condition. One small paint flaw under the hatch key and that's it. The mileage is very well documented. As further proof, Sean found a huge mouse nest in the air cleaner.
The car was not in Mecum's advance material and was not even listed on the xeroxed bid sheet for the day, so I guess no 928 fans came to buy. The other folks there were looking for US muscle. One guy bid $17,500. I bid $20,000 and there were no other bids. I was stunned.
The car spent its early life in the Los Angeles area and was then inherited by a son in Phoenix. It was bought in 2009 by a Scottsdale guy, who later moved to WI and MN. I don't have a clue how it ended up in a Dallas auction.
It will be driven!

Congratulations! I think I saw you on TV and you looked pretty happy as you should. Was there a reserve on this car? I don't recall.
I think Mecum is a good place to find cars like these, as you say most are looking for muscle and not European exotics. I have seen some nice cars go for little $

There was no reserve on it. This was my first car auction ever. It is scary buying a car at auction as you can't start them up, much less test drive them, before you buy.
If you saw me on TV, you saw that I got so excited that I tried to outbid myself. Fortunately the Mecum floor lady calmed me down and let me stay with my original bid.
I went to the auction looking for American muscle. I saw this 928 and remembered how much a good friend had loved his. I knew nothing about 928s other than that. This one came up before the Chevelle restomod I had my eye on and I took a chance on it. I got it for 1/3 of what the Chevelle went for and, now that I've studied up on 928s and driven the car, it is a 3X better car. I feel blessed!
It will be in Marble Falls in November if you want to see it.
