Horn honks when I turn right & Looking for a Momo hub
 

This morning I was dusting off the 79 for a local Cars and Coffee event today. I had enough time, so I decided to finally install the quick release hub and Momo steering wheel I picked up from Mark Anderson. This is my track car, right now I have to move the seat back and raise up the pod in order to exit the Recaro Pole Position seat. With a removable steering wheel I won't have to move that stuff, plus I want the wheel closer.

Long story short, I discovered my box of 5 or 6 Momo hubs are all 944/VW splines. Either I lost a 928 one or never had one in the first place.....

So I had to re-install the wheel that was on the car. A 4-spoke with an extended hub. I don't know if the tab is broken off or what, but this wheel does not cancel out the turn signal......

It's clocked the same as before, but now when I make a right hand turn, there is a brief honking of the horn. So far nobody has turned their head to look, but it is rather annoying.

Any ideas? Is it possible I just have the wheel torqued down too tight?

I know, why bother trying to fix it when I'm going to install something else anyway. First off, I need to find a hub....and in my experience the aftermarket hubs cause their own problems so I would like to get to the root of this problem before attacking whatever I'll discover with the Momo unit.


As for the Car and Coffee event, I was the first 928 to ever show up at this monthly gathering, then two more arrived (I only knew one of them previously).

Horn sounds when the circuit is completed through one of three contacts points on the horn pad. A wire leads to the horn pad. Maybe the wire is contacting ground somewhere when turning right.

I forgot to mention, no horn pad. I never put it back on.

The tab on the switch combo is somehow making contact to ground when turning right. Normally this tab touches the brass ring embedded in the plastic ring which is screwed to the steering wheel, in your case to the hub extension. The wire which connects to the horn pad is attached to the plastic ring. Either the plastic ring is missing or the wire is contacting to ground.

If you have a bad bearing in the steering column it will eventually mess up/tear the L shaped horn contact on the turn signal assembly...

I was going to mention the same as Brian.

Had the same problem with my previous '79 - broken steering shaft bearings.

See if the steering wheel moves up/down or left/right using a bit of effort with the pod locked in place. If it does then you need new bearings.

Cool, those are the kind of "smoking gun" problems I was hoping to hear about.
I need to pull the pod anyway to fix the speedo gear.

I've owed this car since 2004 (I think) and I haven't done anything but brake pads and oil changes.

I suppose it's about time I had to fix something!!!!

Eric when fitting any new hub assembly to the column you must reset the T Signal switch depth, as this will vary between hubs.
what your looking for is the tab to bend about 1 to 1 1/2 MM from the hub ring contact. add some grease to the ring/tab.

The cancel may need some cleaning or the switch may be worn out.
Put a towel under the switch then spray with elex cleaner then blow dry.
NOTE a few quick sprays of Deoxit into the switch then a shot of air will also help the switch

All cars have quirks...

When I had my 04 GTO/Holden Monaro.....they had a known propensity for, when it weather was HHH and A/C was cranked, horn would intermittently go off. Driving in straight line, motoring a long, and your car tries to pick a fight with whatever/whomever is adjacent. Frustrating quirk.
Apropos of nothing.

Hacker- I ran into the same problem with the hub for my new steering wheel. This was my solution.

I may have to clean it up a little to round out the forward most part where the rods were welded in. It would have been much easier to weld in the 928 part upside down like it is shown in the 5th picture, but I was not sure how that would affect the horn and the turn signal return switch. I am hoping this will perform as stock. Time will tell.

UPDATE - the problem must be with this particular steering wheel, and only when driving does it intermittently honk on right turns.
Sitting still, moving the wheel back and forth, grabbing any portion of the wheel and rocking it around does not activate the horn. Nothing really feels loose either.

I also installed a Momo M7005 hub with an additional extension via a quick release hub. No issues so far.


Specifically which hub do you have? I figure there is more than one with the 928 spline, but only one is fully compatible with the 928.

I discovered discrepancies like this trying to put an aftermarket wheel on my Scirocco. It's the same spline as the 944/924, but not the same hub. Putting the 944 hub on my VW caused the horn to always be on.
I currently have four different Momo hubs that all "fit" the 944, Scirocco, 924 and various other VW's. If I put the wrong one on, either the turn signals do not work right, horn is funky, or it's so tight turning the wheel is rather difficult.

I ended up grinding off the bottom of the stock steering wheel and welding it to the hub provided with the sparco?/nardi? wheel. I have only used it on a four mile round trip but lots of stops and turns. It seems to function fine.
