Default mechanical oil pressure gauge help

Hello all. Hey I finally became a Rennlist member after lurking for 2 months.

I've been suspect of my oil pressure sender for some time. I'd like to check actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. I'd appreciate any suggestions, links, shop procedures, etc. to get me set up.

My pressure gauge sometimes takes 4 or 5 seconds to register any pressure when starting. My gauge never pegs out at 5 bar. Lately I've noticed normal pressure has dropped about 0.5 bar from previously normal 4 to 4.5 bar operation. I'd just like to check actual pressure, and find out (hopefully) the pressure sender is the problem.

Thanks in advance.

This was the exact problem I had with a bad sender on my 91.

Issue with hooking up a mechanical guage is getting the right adapter, for the gauge (which itself is cheap enough).

Alternatively just by a new sender .....

put in new sender.

If that doesn't help, you will probably need to canniblize the old sender to adapt the mechanical gauge to the port where the sender goes. I think it is a weird thread if I remeber correctly. You will have to drill and tap or weld on a fitting that the mechanical sender can connect to (pipe probably).

the sender is a pain to get off without the correct tools. You may want to find out exactly what is the best tool to do the job before you get started. It's a large 20 something mm wrench that you can't get at easily. I think it needs one of those socket/open end wrench tools. There's got to be sombody on the list that would know.

5 seconds may be the amount of time it takes for the oil to get flowing. When I start my mercedes, it sounds like a diesel for 5 or 10 seconds until the oil gets to the lifters.

It may be fair to ask what oil you are using as it may not be flowing well. Also, if your engine has a lot of miles on it, you may need new crank bearings.

good luck

The gauges and adapter kits should be available from you local auto parts store. The last gauge I bought included the adapters from metric to NPT. If you can't find the adapters locally, JC Whitney sells the kits for $4.99 (#13UG9267A in catalog #677J-08).

BTW I would buy the best/most accurate mechanical gauge available. i.e. stay away from the $5.99 POS.
