what does the hall sensor really do?

Yes, the ECU that Andy has in his car could be more dependant on the signal from the Hall sensor being present. I have heard of some modern cars not starting when they have a Hall sensor problem.

the hall sensor is just a cam position sensor.....like others said the ECU uses its signal to determine ignition timing. Which is why when it fails the cars are flat at higher RPM, since they loose 6' across the board as a safety measure....vs knock sensors which are 3'
it is a PITA to change.....i did it on my S4 before..... I believe in Mark Andersons racer car had this failure and it cost him around 60whp up high.....

just replaced it after months of erratic behavior culminating in a no start condition , now runs great….but after heavy search..I have yet to fully understand the role of this sensor…..seems to be more important than I thought and the ecu needs good info to work properly (more than retarding timing)
any thoughts???

Andy...
Was on my cell phone texting my GF while sitting at a red light and didn't see the light changed to green and flipped off the truck driver behind me, then I saw that you were the original poster.
Hall sensor, on your engine, could easily have a "larger role" than on the Bosch injection.
Sorry.
