Picture request: Foam pad over heat shield in trans tunnel (hot console air issue)
The two threads properly illustrate the issue I experience.
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...r-shifter.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...h-channel.html
I'd like to get a picture of the foam pad that drops down from sagging motor mounts, pictures of the opening that is created, and anything else related (diy fix instructions). The separation causes hot air to enter the cabin at negative pressures (window open). It sits on the heat shield over the catalytic converters.
I'd like to know what I'm up against, and the best method to fix the issue. I assume that I'll have to buy some new foam or some way to seal the opening. Does anyone know what type of foam is recommended? I'm asking this blind, as I haven't yet taken the head shield down to inspect. A search didn't yield anything that was of real value.

Automatic or 5-speed? They're more or less the same total volume but IIRC the automatic foam is two separate pieces.
Either way, you'll be dropping the torque tube to be able to get at whatever foam is in there. Probably easier to A) verify you have sagging engine mounts, and B) replacing them.
Not sure whether anyone's cured this by blowing Great Stuff expanding foam up above the TT in any gap created by sagging mounts. But I wouldn't want to be the first guy to burn a 928 to the ground because that stuff turns out to have a flashpoint below at 200oF, or whatever.
Here's a shot, sorta, of a 5-speed foam, in place. You can see how the shift rods hold it in place. No such constraint on an automatic, though both are secondarily held in place with fabric tape.

Automatic. I'm already doing the motor mounts, so we'll see if the issue is remedied from that alone.
I do plan to put constantine super bearings in next, so I'll worry about that when I have the TT out.
That picture is pretty interesting! Nothing at all like what I was picturing. Would love some more detailed pics from anyone out there. I can see how how a lower torque tube would actually pull away the foam, since it surrounds the TT itself. Neat!

Retail on the two foam pieces for an automatic in 2013 was $155 and $38, not sure whether they're still available new. I've never seen a new foam piece in the flesh, would be interesting to see how much they change dimensionally over time. If they don't shrink it certainly isn't worth buying a new one...

A quick search found these links:
A couple of simple pix of the foam
https://rennlist.com/forums/8538392-post2.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/9212282-post19.html
And Dean_Fuller's magnolia-infused S4 Torque Tube and Transmission Install video @ ~1:20 - 1:41.
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...all-video.html
And last but not least, posts #27 and #28 Wayne's "Torque Tube, Torque Converter Bearing Replacement Procedure w/pics" are a treasure trove of great pix of the foam:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...re-w-pics.html
(Not to mention the pix of the title procedure. It had been a while since I was in one of Wayne's tutorials and, while I know how good they are, it's easy to forget just how f&^#ing spectacularly good they are.)
Maybe Roger will chime in with part #, price and availability, but I've often wondered whether these things would do the job of fixing or replacing the foam.

Dang... you would have been perfect to measure the height of the brand new foam, to check for deformation. Or even do a picture comparison of old/new.
