Default Pennzoil Platinum Pure Plus Motor Oil

I'm sure everyone has noticed by now the banners for this new synthetic oil on RennList. It does appear to be ground breaking technology, and a truly new type of oil, since the base oil is made from natural gas at Shell's huge GTL (gas to liquids) plant in Quatar. As a Shell employee (Shell owns Pennzoil), I was very interested to learn more and find out if it was a good oil for our 928s.

I noticed that Pennzoil was taking questions about the oil over on the Bob The Oil Guy Forum, so I thought about doing something similar here on RennList. I contacted the company that owns Rennlist and asked if Shell had to be a sponsor to discuss the oil on the forum. They replied that Shell/Pennzoil is already a sponsor, so no problem, and suggested I create a new ID that makes it clear I am representing Shell/Pennzoil.

Although I did makes some contacts in the Pennzoil area of the business and discussed a RennList Q/A thread on the oil, I hadn't yet gotten all the pieces in place to start such a thread.

Yesterday, and the Shell Houston Grand Prix, I spoke to a Pennzoil engineer who works with the custom race oils that are formulated for Nascar and Indy cars, and he gave me a very clear answer that this oil is not a high zinc motor oil. It was probably a marketing decision not to go after the high zinc market.

So although I'm very excited about this oil for my other vehicles, and it's ability to keep engine internals cleaner, it doesn't appear to be the right oil for engines that require high zinc because of flat tappets.

(Disclaimer: I'm not an engineer or expert on motor oil. I work as an IT Architect, so am just passing on information I have learned about this new oil)

Don, I have been using " Lubriguard" 15 w 40 in my 928 and in my trucks for a long time. Have been using it for about 12 years total with no problems. Its made by Warren oil and in testing by the Petroleum Institute outperformed many of the better known and higher priced oils.
High ZDDP count and very good viscosity across the board.
They sell it a auto zone.

www.pqiamerica.com They tested about 20 major oils. Pretty interesting results. Look for the lubriguard March 2013 testing. I will post it when I get home later this afternoon.

I just recently put this Motul 300V ester core oil in one of my bikes, and I think I would switch my 928 to it from the Valvoline full syn I had been using.

Lon,

Interesting web page. I see that Penn Pure Plus Platinum Ultra, is actually relatively high in zinc compared to the competition at almost 1000ppm, but still much less than the 1200-1300 ppm in the true high zinc oils.

Lots of good information on that site.

I recently tried the new Pennzoil synthetic in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Previous I had been using Mobil 1 5-30 extended synthetic for my 4.7l v8.

I am disappointed with the new Pennzoil synthetic and I will be dumping it after less than 1000 kms. Will go back to Mobil 1.

Why were you disappointed?

Well my Jeep sits a lot and when I start it (after sitting a spell) when using Mobil oil the engine top end would not make any noise.

Last oil change I could not find any extended Mobil so bought the Pennzoil. The engine now clacks away on cold start for 2-4 minutes. If you spend any time around JGCs you know how bad this is for a 4.7. So I am ordering in some Mobil 1 extended life and will switch out the Pennzoil.

In both cases I used 5-30 oil and a Mopar filter.

Gotcha. I switched from Mobil 1 to Amsoil Z Rod and the 928 engine ran much quieter.

Hi Don Carter - If the 928s require higher levels of zinc for flat tappets (and it appears that the 928s discussed in this inquiry do), we would recommend the use of either our Quaker State Defy product, or our Rotella T Triple Protection (or even Rotella T6) product. These appear to be older 928s (hence, the need for higher zinc for flat tappets), so they are probably wanting a 10W40 or 15w40 viscosity product….so, the QS Defy 10W40 and/or the Rotella products would all have approx. 1200 ppm of zinc (as opposed to the 800 ppm of zinc that the newer, API SN “low ash” motor oils have). And finally, just as an FYI: the QS Defy is a semi-synthetic product, the Rotella T Triple Protection is a conventional product, and the Rotella T6 is a full synthetic product. - The Pennzoil Team

I would not use a 10W40 in my car (I use only 20W50) - yet that is what the Pennzoil selection guide recommends.

However these specific new oils are available in heaviest form at 10W30...

I think anyone in a hot climate may have issues (maybe big issues) with such a light oil... I'd err on the side of caution and let someone else test that...
