Passat Blower Motor Replacement
I found this Passat blower motor on eBay and was wondering if anyone could confirm that it is the unit that will replace the 928's blower.

That looks identical to the one I installed. You would need to remove the motor and fan from the top cover, then press off the Passat fan cage, and press on the 928 fan cage onto the motor shaft. Then either splice the wiring, or solder on new wires to the two terminals on the motor.
You may want to make sure it is a Bosch motor, as that fan is available from different manufacturers, some of which are not Bosch, and sell a lot cheaper than the VDO/Bosch item.
Cheers!

My fix is a new blower motor and harness that takes the extra amp draw.
Always interested in alternatives. Apart from changing the cage you will need to find a way to mount the Passat motor housing on top of the existing shroud.

The Passat motor housing is not used at all. The "new" motor is pulled out of the Passat housing, and once the 928 fan cage is on the shaft, the assembly slides in perfectly into the 928 fan housing. Even the top screw hole is identical to the stock one. Installed it in my 90GT project. Haven't run it yet though...

YES, only use the motor itself, pull the VW cage and lose it. I used a small three pronged gear puller to remove the 928 cage, I had to modify the prongs by thinning them to fit between the blades of the 928 fan. I used a small socket to press the 928 cage onto the shaft, uses the same clip, Also the wire plug is different, so that needs to be spliced, and make sure the polarity matches the direction of rotation needed, it is a dc motor, so it is able to spin either direction. I have had a used one from a '91 passat in for over two years now.
It was cheap 'cause I already had the blower from a parts car.

This motor is confirmed working. I can't make any comparisons as I have no experience with a new 928 blower motor but it seems to be blowing more air than my old worn out unit.

I bought the Passat motor because I'm a poor Taswegian .
My blower housing is from a RHD 928. the Passat motor does not directly bolt onto the 928 housing. It has unthreaded holes that do not line up.
So what did I do?
I used a new 90-97 Passat motor and housing and the 928 fan. Using a jigsaw I cut the rim of the 928 housing to allow the Passat motor to line up with the intake , thus :
All holes and gaps were then sealed. Messy, but no-one sees it! I had to cut around the top housing for a relief for the shaft. After installation this was covered with the rubber plug from the old setup.
I found the wiring was as for the original motor. Just spliced into the original wire & plug. The final battle was getting the taller housing reinstalled. In the end I had to cut a 4mm slot at the edge of the cowl (suitable protected now , and covered by the removable cowl). Now I need one of those nice cowl covers...And using man maths , I can now afford it
Luckily my resistor pack was all good , I just adjusted the bimetallic strip for perfect operation. Now I have air and heat where I want and need it. For $50 and a fair amount of effort. You have been warned!
