Default How to tell if it's an 86.5

How can you tell the difference between an 86.5 and an 86? Many thanks.

I think that only applies to some countries so it depends on where you are from, fairly sure all Australian 1986 are 86.5. Brake calipers will tell you unless they have been upgraded by PO.

My euro vin is 0146 and was brought over from Germany and has 86.5 features - brakes, dual exhaust, smaller battery box to fit exhaust.

From Wiki......

1986

Model designation: 928 S / 928 S2 (UK)
  • Engine displacement: 4.7 L (286 CID) / 5.0 L (302 CID) (North America, optional ROW)
  • Valves: Two per cylinder (four for North America, optional ROW)
  • Power: 310 PS (306 hp, 228 kW) (worldwide) / 292 PS (288 hp, 215 kW) (for North America)
  • Changes:
  • Lowered 9.3:1 compression ratio four-valve engine optional for some ROW markets along with catalytic converter, standard in Australia. Compression change was done with different shape piston tops.
  • "S4" suspension package and Brembo brakes for 1986 models (from VIN 1001 and November 1985 onwards in North America). No U.S. models made with VIN ending between 0938 and 1000 due to parts change.
  • ABS brakes became standard for all markets during model year production.

86.5 have S4 4 pot Brembo brake calipers - easy to spot. Several other detail changes.

The jacking points on the 86.5 are visible when standing next to the car. The older ones were tucked in.

I thought that it was 1200 and above on the last four.
Not counting euro's.

The rear ones, very, the front ones not so much. Best way though to tell from the exterior.

So the answer is: it really depends on how you are looking at the car, in person or online or via documentation.

Hi

As John said... 4 pot front calipers rather than 2 is easiest way to tell...

I have an 86 (UK) which is what you Colonials call an 86.5 ...lol

All the best Brett
