Yeh not sure what the OP is on about, that is obviously not an original Porsche relay. Is Porsche not the criminal here rather than our vendors?

I think our vendors are pretty dear to most of us, owning the 928 was made a lot easier by having a friendly vendor like Roger!

I think you are mixing up your relays

I don't think I'm confusing the relay at all, this company, who shall remain nameless, has two for my 1983, one is listed as OEM, and the other as "GENUINE" and they are both listed at this price. I used to rely on this company, but now I will look elsewhere. If someone hasn't called them up and told them what poor public relations this is, they should do them a favor.

My thread is reacting to the fact that some places are selling this same part for $7 and some are obviously not doing the 928 enthusiast group any favors.

So those of you who jumped in and said "we are selling this for $7", go ahead and post your link, there are other people out there who would like to avoid spending over a hundred bucks for this relay.

regards,

P

+1

I've cleaned out the relay's and fuses from at least a dozen BMW, Audi, Volvo etc... from the local pick and pull. If I have other parts to buy, they don't even charge for that stuff.

I've even stripped the complete wiring harness from about half a dozen German cars.
What for?
OEM original wire is some of the best you can get and I doubt I'll ever need something longer than the harness that goes from the trunk mounted battery in a BMW.

There's only 1 decent Pik-A-Part within driving distance of here, up in Anaheim. Their 928 selection is awesome, but those relay prices, hoo.....

All our vendors must source and BUY their parts from others and prices vary as does the quality and or originality of the parts. If you sell thousands of parts it is not always possible to search out the cheapest best source for every single one and confirm that they do function correctly. The electrical ignition switch is a good example of where the commonly available replacement switch is an inferior product prone to early failure so many vendors including Roger T. only recommend and sell the "real" switch.
Glad your relay works, enjoy your car....

James, I appreciate the fact that you identified yourself as not being in the parts business. And I don't disagree with anything you said. My point is "how much profit on a low cost item like this is actually ethical"?

I have a nice Volvo XC70, the coil packs went out Thursday. I got online with a reputable volvo club site and found out what to do (and did).

I found the coil pack items were available per item from the high 50s to just over $100, and the 5-cyl turbo motor required five of them. So instead of paying over $500 to get the car back in operation, I paid $300 (and they made a profit on that).

Then it came to plugs. A reputable Volvo house anyone would know about was selling the volvo proprietary branded plug for $53 for five, yet I had to pay $82 for five (at the dealer, for the same exact part with the Volvo logo) just because I had to do the work on Saturday.

So how can someone really justify selling me a spark plug for $10.60 and then the next guy has to have $16.40 for the exact same thing in the same wrapper?

What would you call it? Some would call it "free market" and they are right. But there are other terms that can be used too.

regards,

P

I sometimes check Amazon--that relay (928.615.116.00) is $9.95. As usual, Roger usually beats it and apparently hates profit; in this case, ~30%

Perhaps it's a genuine (!) mistake. Have you told them that their price is not competitive?

Thank you Roger, I'll be looking through your web site and will be happy to support your business, as I need more parts.
I think you saw the posting I made that confirmed i did not mix up the relays.

I first identified the relay I needed, searched various parts houses including yours I believe, but did not find anyone but the vendor I listed who was confirming the part would work in my 83.

I just checked your web site now under the relay section, and if I were doing a search for that 928.615.116.000 I would not have found it there because it does not appear to be listed. If I missed it, please show me how I can find this part at your shop for $7, and also please identify any other relays that might be available, as I will surely need more eventually.

The old ones I've taken apart show a mist of fine white corrosion. Some of you guys in southern cal, arizona, or denver won't have that problem but we do where it rains :-) It's called humidity.

regards,

P

You know I probably should, however, I really don't like calling people like that but in this case I probably should.

I just moseyed over to Dave and Jeannie's, and did a search for 928.615.116.00. Pulls up two relays, one Porsche, 1 OEM. Here's a screengrab of the pricing.

Where exactly is the misrepresentation or the subterfuge?

This is a generic Bosch SPDT relay. Hardly difficult to source. It may indeed be that others are charging a huge premium price - but this is not a special relay... For the ones that actually are unique designs - there are not such easy substitutions...

Any Tyco/Bosch/Hella or OEM: VW or Audi SPDT relay will be fine for use here.

Roger's site leaves some to be wanted. If you need parts just give Roger a call and he can answer almost any question about any part you may need. And yes, he know's his site sucks hahaha. But we all <3 him anyways.
