Default Window motors/guides refresh

Hi all- going through both doors to clean/re-grease, etc. My guides don't seem too bad but i'm going to get new ones to be safe. I found the inserts at the bottom of the steel tubes on BOTH doors were completely hammered and crumbling. I did find something i didn't expect- the doors don't seem to have been taken apart before, vapor barriers were super stiff and crumbled, and things just look original in there BUT take a look at the pics. the passenger door motor was completely different with a rectangular plastic covered armature instead of the (magnesium?) end cover like the driver side. Common, or non-original?

Also- when people re-assemble these, do you grease the steel upright tube or leave dry? the old ones had some gunked up dirty grease all wadded up in the teflon/plastic guides which i'm sure made things slower. Because the steel rods are so polished/smooth, i'd compare them to a motorcycle fork which slides dry into the seals, etc. Am i wrong here? any guidance is appreciated.

I plan on doing all of this, and then installing some sound barrier and drip panel like Stan recommends before i re-install the inner door panels. I also put some new felt on the 4 guides, and bought some new outer seals from Roger. i'm sure i'll have a bunch of adjusting to do..
Thanks!

the passenger side motor is the original style to the old cars. I'd bet that the driver's side was replaced at somee point, as it should also have the dark square box.

Interesting that the early cars have chromed/plated guide tubes, they're painted black on the later cars. Not sure when that changed, since PET lists the same part # from 78-95.

Yes the more rounded motor case is the later style one.

I used white lithium grease on the guide tubes when I did all my stuff last year. FWIW, I also replaced the rollers--wheels on both sides were loose. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...e-used-it.html

Might be worth-while to clean and relube the motor/gearbox WYAIT.

Off-topic...

I just wanted to say how impressed I am with NoVector's continuing work on combining the vintage pin-ups with the 928 - beautiful work!

Is it a euro thing? My 81 parts car has the black painted tubes.

I did mine recently- cleaned everything and smeared some vaseline on the guides. I find grease tends to dry out and then when it does, becomes an additional resistance the motors have to overcome and eventually do not. I have also left it dry previously.

I also noted a little trick whilst the inner cover is off. My doors used to squeal like a bitch when opening/closing- I cleaned up the strap receiver from inside the door with some carb cleaner spray and re-greased- the squeaky door syndrom dissappeared- not sure how long it will last.

I also noted that the plastic sheet cover was dropping to pieces- not sure what this is supposed to but this time I left it out altogether- will probably repelave later if a replacement is available- cna anyone advise the prupsoe of this sheet? it seems as though it is intended to seal water from getting to the inner cover- is this correct? How or why it should get there in the first place no idea.

Regards

Fred

The sheet protects your compressed fiber door card from water and also helps reduce road noise. Mr Merlin swears by going to your local dollar store and buying the heaviest clear or white shower curtain they have, cutting new pieces out, and gluing in with contact cement. I used some plastic sheeting I had laying around to replace mine.

Update on some progress, and a question (of course.):
Got all four new teflon guides for the uprights and replaced mine, clean the guide tube, new inside inserts for the tube bottom, and took the motors apart. i took a few pics to help anyone else thinking of doing this, Roger knew the part #'s since they're different from passenger to driver doors (angles, etc) i got things all assembled, and things looked good, and went up well. I also installed new outer lower seals from Roger. Now- once the outer seal was installed, the window wants to really push in towards the interior and unless i put a few pounds of pressure outward it jams up into the inside of the door, completely out of the felt.. Anything someone has seen before? I don't really see any way to adjust this, when i help it into place to go up all the way, you can hear the pressure when you put it down again and it "springs" in once it's out of the felt, which i know is not good. i tried adjusting the felt guides but once the window is up all the way they're not helping up there since they're at the bottom.

it is the felt guides. Keep playing with the adjustment and you will get it.Yes I know they are on the bottom - but that is only when the window is in the full up position. They are on top when the window is fully down, and in the middle when the window is in the middle, and so forth. They are a pita to properly adjust, but that is what is causing your problem most likely.

Thanks Ed I'll give it another try tonight. I adjusted them all the way in, Then adjusted out which put enough pressure on the window to make it a little bit better up at the top but it put a lot of pressure on the rubber guides and it squealed terrible. Guides have new felt too. Try again tonight! BTW, those new outer seals are sweet..

Hi Matt- just did the PS roller and guides (and a new motor) on mine yesterday- on the adjustment, have you adjusted the lower guide as far as you can to line up the glass with the top of the window frame? And just an info note for the thread: my painted guide tube had a good buildup of hardened grease that I cleaned off, and I used Harken winch grease to lube the tube- my fave for anything in a damp/wet environment. And one more comment, this is a good bang-for-the-bucks job, no more rattle, nice and smooth - DS next!

Thank you Martin. I think you hit the nail right on the head I'm at work now but I remember a little bit more adjustment on the slots on the Lower guide that I can probably squeeze enough to make it work. Back out there tonight! have a great day.
