The top of the market of anything "rare" is being inflated by the current bubble.

Here is a 88S4 that just sold for $5900 U.S in Toronto Canada,

I think prices are steady but try selling a 928 and see how many calls you get.

I always thought that 928's would reach a point when "projects" finally die and sacrifice themselves to the nice properly maintained cars...when that point is finally hit and only the nicer ones are left, then prices will start to rebound. A good economy doesn't hurt either

Mine pays dividends every day I get in and drive it, look at it and even think about it. I know my investment will pay off this way.

Fundamental flaw is to lump all 928's together, when there are clearly half a dozen "market segments" that only slightly overlap. The average price of a 163k mile OB in average condition has nothing to do with the price of a GTS, a GT, or even a 40k mile OB.

Each of these has some overlap with its neighbor, but not much beyond.

Less than $5k
Less than $10k
Less than $20k
More than $20k
More than $50k

There isn't even that much tracking between same model, same condition AT vs 5spd, maybe a $5k variable spread.

I reject the notion that the abundance of $5k project cars has any real impact on $25k nice cars, there is no crossover among those two groups of buyers. At least not on the first one bought.

Folks will always try to use the $5k project cars as leverage to squeeze the prices of the premium examples. At the same time, folks who buy them with any kind of monetary ROI in their minds seem to balk at spending enough to make the mediocre examples nice again.

At a recent parking-lot gathering, the spectrum leaned heavily towards relatively new, relatively enthusiastic buyers who have big dreams for their new projects. Lots of questions about things like wheels and accessories, when they are at least three sets of premium wheels and tires away from having just a reliable 928 driver. I guess adding nice tires and wheels is easy/fast bling, but to me I'd be worried about damaging the wheels and the tires rotting during any actual restoration process.

All it really needs is...:
Mechanical driveline maintenance and repair assuming it runs OK now, brakes overhauled with new calipers, MC, hoses and rotors, AC system overhaul including the vent/vacuum system, new radiator, new shocks, steering rack, motor mounts and OPG, rebuilt control arms, battery and electrical rework. Reliable driver. Then just carpet/seats/seals/moldings and trim, after of course the new paint. Oh, and that set of blingy wheels. $10k away from a $5k car? That's WAY optimistic IMHO.

Once the market realistically recognizes/appreciates the real differences between the projects and the premium examples, recovery and restoration will be easier to swallow financially. This group, collectively, is its own worst enemy as we badmouth and potshot nice cars offered for decent money. Please do everything you can to elevate the market position of good cars. You all know what it takes to bring an almost-dead dog to premiunm status. A few know what it takes to bring an almost-premiun car to premium status. Help everyone out, including yourself.

I want someone to report a sale - bought or sold - above 25K. Any year, any model. Obviously on the honor system. The reply should start out with "I bought my..." or "I sold my...". Not "I think..." or "I hope..." or "I heard..." or "I'm asking..."

Mark Anderson sold his 84 recently for his asking price and reported the sale price here on rennlist in a thread.

You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about what people actually paid? You were psuhing for it in another recent thread too.

I sold my S cheaply as it went to a great home and would be loved (and all the niggles sorted out). I got my S4 manual relatively cheaply as well, even after freight, a new LH computer, rego, some paint, a new steering wheel, and tyres.. the way it drives... for less than 30grand is incredible.
Buy a Ferrari that does everything a 928 does and your looking at an FF for 100k plus.

As an aside, last year I was heading out of Baskerville, the local racetrack in Tassie (and the best short course circuit in the world) and coming the other way was a Tesstarossa... the Ferrari flagship of the time and the Porsche one... Ferrari looked incredible.. but the guy waved to me, and I must say, I`d rather have a 928 that can go on long trips, take luggage, go shopping, go anywhere.

I paid more than $25K for my 94 Iris Blue Metaillic GTS 5spd. It had 46,000 miles and though not stock only needed a windshield washer tank cap and jump post cover to be perfect. And no deferred maintenance to take care of.

I've had 6 people tell me when I sell to give them first dibs, including one of the previous owners.

In the spirit of everything has it's price it would currently take $80,000 to get my butt out of the driver's seat. It's the same number as when my brother asked why I spent so much for an old car when I could get a new Mustang for less.

Certain vehicles are worth the higher prices when you factor in:
* Rarity
* Condition
* How it makes you feel
Personally I look for cars with these attributes and have been fortunate to find them. They have also sold at or above what I purchased them for. I don't invest in cars, but invest in me. Enjoy them and if you break even when you sell that's a bonus.

I paid £11,000 ($17000) for 1993 GTS 5-spd with 130,000 miles on the clock in 2012. Porsche UK press car from Nov 1992 to Sep 1993. Then one owner car, accident free, with a full service history, including an engine rebuilt - new oversize pistons and rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, injectors cleaned and flow matched, new oil and water thermostats, new oil cooler, new clutch, new clutch slave and master cylinders, fully working aircon - in 2010 at 122,000 miles due to overheating. Since then I have renewed the suspension, engine and transmission mounts, flushed the PSD and installed braided Goodridge brake hoses. I fitted GT cams and JDS PEMs, as well as X-pipe and GT resonators. I have also had it detailed inside and outside. Everthing works - including the RDK. The car is at 133,000 miles now. I have just turned down an offer of £20,000 ($34,000) for the car. The only car, which can replace it is an Aston Martin DB9 6spd manual - they retail at $48,000...

Just got back from driving the GTS...went to the dentist and back. Drooled on myself smiling with the side of my face still numb on the way back...that $80,000 got just a bit firmer.
