Default Stereo update S4 10 speaker system w/pics

I have just started this process so we are early in the development but I wanted to share some pics as the progress has been substantial... My goal is to retain a stock/oem look when complete. I researched some threads before I started to know what lye in front of me.

6 1/2" speakers - These were tricky and you will see by the pics that we had to fabricate some aluminum pieces to the original speaker covers so we could still mount in the stock form and hold speakers correctly. Haven't installed fully yet as we have to address speaker wire. We also clocked them correctly so the wires mount on the bottom. The OEM speaker covers are formed to the cars interior. First two pics are the 6 1/2" speakers with mounts.

3 1/2" speakers in the door and back panel. I shared a pic of them installed I can easily take one out and share a photo but the simple answer is that we cut (rotozipped) the plastic away underneath the speaker and used a blade to cut the dust cover on the speaker so the stock speaker would fall out. We used some Memphis speakers (removed the "M" log in the center for clearance) with the factory speaker grille and mounted them through and underneath the original bracket and speaker cover. I will post more pics if needed since nothing is truly finished yet.

Regarding the tweeter speakers we will mount another tweeter in that hole and use the same mount again to retain the factory setup.

Here are some pics. The head unit has been purchased but not installed and I have a Alpine V12 amp from the PO or the POBH (Previous Owner Before Him) that should work well. If not, I will change but figured what the hell.

Thanks for looking.
Bryan

PS. Other project in the background.. Waiting on newly powdercoated calipers to arrive. You can see the 928 rear window in the background.

Cool... You know Hans already has worked out some pretty good door speakers and I think some rear Q panel speakers as well... Perhaps not what you are looking for though.

I will look into those as well with Hans... had already purchased mine before I started to search so i figured I would see what we could get done and what everything looked like undone.

Question: Do the speaker wires from the door go directly to the in dash unit or is there either a cross over or an amp that I need to look for. Mine is an 91 S4 with a 10 speaker system. When I searched I couldn't seem to find anything for sure than by the passengers legs which mine doesn't have... possibly already taken out.

The factory system has an 8 pin DIN cable that runs from the head unit to a six channel amp under the cover to the right of the passenger seat. All speaker wires then run from there to the various locations.

Here's a crappy pic of the amp in situ:

Thanks, I was looking next to the center console... not under the cover by the door. Good to know. I will have a look.

Default my amp location is vacant

This is what is left of mine... So, I'm guessing the speakers are wired to the amp I have in back and possibly the head unit up front.

I am using all 10 speakers. I am not doing a sub. My goal is to retain factory look but have much better sound. Factory in the speakers appearance only. The deck was already removed years ago and I just replaced it with a newer and much nicer Kenwood.

you'll want a sub of some sort. i had Infinity Kappas and an aftermarket (i forget) headunit in my first 928, and it definitely needed some help with bass. i'm not the type to have it thumping the neighborhood, i like it tight and crisp.

my current 928 has a small powered sealed sub .... under the luggage cover out of sight.

As others have said, leave the 4.5" rear quarter speakers out of the mix. They hurt the sound stage rather than help. The factory system had crossovers for the rear tweeters and 4.5" mid-bass drivers mounted to the backs of the 6.5" woofers as well as crossovers mounted to the back side of the door panels for the door speakers.

Hope this helps.

Default update

Guys, made some progress today Here are some pics of them installed. Current Alpine V12 4 channel amp from PO works well.

Also, I was able to put the crossover for the tweeter in the 3 1/2 in holes and sit between the speakers once both are installed and doesn't move at all. Turned out good and works well. I have an RCA for a sub if needed but don't plan on installing one at the moment.

The last two pics are how I separated the old speakers to use the housing. once I figured out how I wanted to do it it literally takes about 5 minutes per speaker with a rotozip.

Thanks for all the help.

Looks like you did the install on the door speakers without removing the door panels?

If so, did you remove the factory crossover from the wiring circuit and run your own wires to the door?

Yes, my factory crossover had already been removed from the PO.
