Anyone with a reasonable opinion please come in. I have the choice of an 86 M28/44 twin cam or a 78 M28/01. I have no problem swapping my brand new 928 heads onto the twin cam block. I am also doing PK Tensioner upgrade so I can use older water pump.

Which would take? Opinions welcomed ;-)

Do a search for 5 liter hybrid ...should pull lots of comments about using the 5 liter short block with the EURO 16 valve heads and intake etc. only two changes are eyebrowing the pistons for two valve clearance and it makes it into a interference motor at least with the Euro cams. Kibort eyebrowed one with the pistons in the block using a hand held grinding tool/ Dremel ran it as a race motor.
Any way you slice it 5 liters is better than 4.5 even with your smaller valves and intake...

Something of a hobby, gives me stories to tell. Also worked on production for two seasons of Car Warriors buying cars. Casting associate and car wrangler for The Car Chasers season 2 on CNBC, also airs in Mexico, South America and Europe. Nepotism at it's best as my daughter co-created the show. But that IS HOLLYWOOD

Lots of good ways to go, for not too much $ from where you are. 5L 16 V hybrid is one way. Or just put the 32V motor in your car with porkens chipset. I have a good spare block that you could have but the shipping would be killer. Last time I was in your position I found a factory new block with pistons and rings for $300 on ebay. Its kinda a tough call from where you are.
-completing your build with a good 4.5 or 4.7 block would make the best of what you have done so far, and should not cost you more than an additional $100 or so. The car would be most original.
-Dropping in the S3 motor would mean having to resell your CIS parts and heads. Perhaps your best performance option, though. Personally I feel that the CIS air meter flap does not let the engines really open up and breathe the way they should. Also I have a hard time getting CIS cars to idle as nicely as the EFI cars.
-Folks here really like the 5.0 hybrid option. I have not done this or driven one but perhaps it would be the best compromise between performance/original/working from where you are.

I would love to know where you all find these deals like "new block with pistons" for $300.

Currently the cheapest option I have is a 4.7 euro block that is 1 hour away from me for $300.

Next best option is a complete euro 86 as a donor for $1500.

Guys on pelican parts were unpleasant and told me good luck finding a hi-comp engine because we hoard it all here.

I guess I will just keep watching the boards and ebay until something pops up.

Thanks!

Well I picked up a 4.7L engine today for parts. Bad block but everything else was good. Price was right at $100. Heads, crank, rods all in great shape. Almost every piston had broken rings. #1 cylinder was totally trash, scored up really bad.

So still on the prowl for a short or long block. Beginning to look like I'll be buying another car just to finish this one:-/

Mark,

A used and unprepared short block on 928intl is $750, add $350 for freight and we're at $1100. I can buy a complete car for $1200. Granted Mark will stand behind the block.

Default RaRST rods, forged crank and...

The M28/20 I just torn down has a forged steel crank, RaRST rods and what appears to be forged pistons. Is this correct for this engine? This engine had definitely been apart all the way down to the main girdle. EVERY piston had at least one broken ring and yet there was no indication of any abuse or bad fuel. Really curious as to what caused the fail. Anyway can anyone enlighten me on the innards of this engine. Oh and the heads seem to be approximately 8-10cc smaller combustion chamber than the 78's I have. Valve sizes are the same though.

PS. Yes I did try to search for "forged crank" and "forged pistons" FWIW

sad part is they sold the guy a "new tensioner" which is B S .... and then managed to have a head gasket issue on startup. Not sure what may have happened but that sounds suspiciously like the engine ate something and lifted the head.... Otherwise it seem too much of a coincidence unless the car sat for years corroding away waiting for a t-belt.
