My LS hybrid build
#16
My bad. LC9 not LQ9. Basically an L33 but with DOD and better Gen 4 parts. Unfortunately I had to spend about $500 to get rid of DOD and change to 3 bolt cam. Xschop what is PCD? I'll take another look at the camaro but last I looked I couldn't find anything reasonably priced.
Lloyd any pix of 8.8 install? Does it use the 930 CV or did you have to adapt it. I like the idea of the ford or camaro deal cause they can be aluminum. Curious how much weight difference.
Any as far as tranny install, no cutting, just some Thor hammer action.

Danny, The Ford 8.8 IRS (independent rear suspension) differential is from a 2003-04 Mustang Cobra with 31 spline axles. The rear cover ($80) with the wide mounting points is from a Ford Explorer. The unit is aluminum and weighs about 75 lbs with a LSD unit. The Drive Shaft shop in Salsbury NC offer an adapter ($550) to go from the 31 spline to Porsche 930 CV. Then I got a pair of 20.25" racing axles ($500) from Sway Away in California. I would also recommend a pair ($210) of rear wheel bearings while you are back there. You can press out the old bearings with a big arbor press. The four ($400) 930 cv joints can be bought at any Porsche vendor. Also look into the sand buggy vendors for 930 axle parts. I just recently saw someone offering an EMPI kit of 4 930 cv joints and 2 axles for something like $350. I have a track car and tend to go over the top with (heavy duty & $$$). I welded up a very simple bracket for the main diff support to the crossmember. I then added simple brackets front and rear of the diff so it would not tilt. In addition, I installed a TKO 600 transmission to my chevy engine. A little bit of hammering of the tunnel, but nothing too severe. My reason for doing this was to eliminate the problems with the 1978 transaxle, eliminate problems with the torque tube, provide a selection of ring and pinion ratios, and install modern heavy duty TKO and 8.8 parts that can be serviced for a reasonable cost. I have been collecting these parts and slowly planning this project over the last 2 years.

Danny.
I did this conversion to my 81
L98, T56, Borg Warner M80 which 928 cvs bolt right onto and GT4288 with inter cooler.
I have done a bit over 10000 miles now and loved every bit of it.
Good luck and I am watching on with much interest.
Cheers
Chuck.

I did not know about the Holden Borg Warner M80 differential, but that looks like a great solution for less cost. Especially if you can use the stock axles.

Don't know if the Borg Warner ex GM Holden was used in any US GM models, It is readily available here in a wide variety of ratios from 3.08 up ,with LSD option.
Main reason I used it was because it fits.
I mounted it on a subframe to get better mounting forward of the nose. Half shafts need to be modified- unequal length
Not sure of spline count of 928 half shafts, (I had custom ones made to revised length and sold the originals) but Holden CV joints bolt up to both the diff and stub axle flange, I suspect they are Waaaaay cheaper than the Porsche equivalent, if the count is the same could be a very cheap replacement for any rear end refresh..
Xschop, I'll get some pic's together for a build thread.

Iron,
From memory when I fitted it a couple of years back, I think about 50 pounds weight. Transaxle weighs about 200?
Big weight difference anyway!

The Pontiac G8 and GTO were brought over from Australia - maybe they use the M80? The G8 was based on the Commodore using the Zeta platform. Not sure about the GTO.

Yes, the GTO and G8 use that diff. Did some research last night. Looks like the GTO guys are using an aftermarket rear cover from Harrop that gives a better mount than the factory single bolt and it gets sketchy above 500 hp? I also looked at the Camaro SS rear and it would work as well as the 8.8, but the cost is more than what I want to spend. I also had looked at the Dutchman and the Moser as well. If I was going to spend the $$, I'd go with the Dutchman, it's a pretty sweet setup. http://www.dutchmanaxles.com/irs-hou...-cv-style.html
