Default Correct part number for GTS power steering rack

Read the old posts regarding getting the correct power steering rack for the GTS' or the later cars, but none mentioned the correct part number.

This is the part number that was given by the repair shop:

928 347 010 CX

Is this the right part number? Didn't see that part number on PET. It's a rebuilt ZF unit.

Thanks.

I cant assist you with your search for the correct part number, BUT
FWIW rebuilt racks are not all the same,
I would suggest to use the racks supplied by 928 INTL as they seem to to be the best parts you can get,
I have installed 8 of them and none have had any comebacks, they look like new out of the box.

I think you're referring to a thread that said if you use a pre-’91 rebuilt rack on a GTS it would cause the steering to be harder to turn. Here's one thread but I remember another (crappy search engine). I think the consensus was, when in doubt, have the existing rack rebuilt rather than replace it with a rebuilt rack. But in the words of ZZ Top, I might be mistaken.

Quick and dirty response since I've typed this a few times and don't want to come across as rude.

I've seen one person in 8 years that had an issue with a steering rack that did not match the 91+ cars. After meeting this person I'm was surprised they could lift a bag of potatoes so it was no wonder that they felt an issue between steering racks.

My advice is buy a rebuilt rack by someone who is known for providing quality rebuilt steering racks. I use ones provided by Roger at 928s'Rus exclusively because he is close, reasonable and fast on turnaround. Mark at 928intl has an impeccable reputation and will treat you great also.

At this point I would not worry about what part number because there really won't be a difference in the near future because each one of them are going to be sent through the same people for rebuilds and they won't know the difference.

If you already have a GTS rack, do not send it off as a core. Rebuild it or get it rebuilt by someone you trust to actually do the work rather than farming it out to someone who just swaps for a core.

Greg Brown posted a few months ago that he rebuilds them himself for this reason.

I rebuilt my own rack (not a GTS one) recently using the same kit as in this thread, it really isn't that hard.

The only tricky part was making a puller for the one blind seal at the base of the pinion shaft.

I'm one of the people whose previous rack was replaced with the 'generic' S4 rebuild from Sean/Roger and I cannot tell a difference on my car. The reduced steering effort was achieved by changes to three things ... a higher pressure steering pump, a different restrictor in the hydraulic hose and the spool valve in the rack. My theory is that if the rack in my car was in fact still original GTS spec, then the other two components must have a greater part of the final result than the rack itself.

Good luck with yours, and post back what you experience.

We dissected a GTS rack and could not find any difference between it and an S4 rack. Tom it was your rack we used at the rebuilder.
All steering racks are the same now 82 to 95. Early (+90) was 928 347 010 24 and later (91 to 95) 928 347 010 27 all supersede to one rebuilt part number 928 347 010 CX.
Personally I think the GTS rack was a myth. The improved performance was gained by the restrictor and the Pump. But that is just me 8>)

Thanks for all the replies.

The GTS is actually my aunts car, mine is fine.

She told me last minute her car was in the shop getting the power steering rack replaced, hers was leaking a bit. I remembered a couple threads regarding getting the correct rack for later cars and I wanted to make sure she was getting the right one.

The tech said he did another GTS a couple months back using the same part number and had no issues with power steering effort. He was going to use the old one as core but I told him she's gonna keep the old one. I think he said the core charge was less than $400. I'll have the old one rebuilt and keep it as a backup. They're also replacing the two protective boots which was torn up.

Car will be done next Wednesday. Be interesting to see if there are any issues.

Is it the torn boots, allowing dirt, etc. to enter causing the rack to leak? Is there a part causing the tear on the boots or is it just disintegrating? On my GTS, the rack and boots are fine, but if they eventually disintegrate or get damaged, its probably a good idea to keep an eye on them and replace.

Thanks again.
