Some accents will survive just anything!
But no not all...
When I came to the US (~25 years ago) I met guy I used to work with in the UK - he was Welsh 'from the valleys' very strong accent. He introduced me to a nice Australian guy and we talked for 30 minutes or so. Afterwards I asked him how he knew him and he tells me they were born in the same town. Apparently Welsh guys who live in Houston, TX for 10 years or so end up becoming quite convincing Australians... %%$%!
