Success! Well, sorta.
I finaly got my fill plug out of my 5 speed differential/transmittion.
I've been haveing a leak, and I was trying to make sure I had enough fluid in the unit.
I sheered off a grade 9 bolt with a 17mm head trying to get it out. Darn.
Finaly, I found the proper socket for the job, and bought it, 7 bucks, and some odd cents, at autozone.
I get the transmittion hot by driveing it around, and then I get under there, and put the socket on it. About 60 ft*lb later, the darn plug it out. Now it wasn't w/o minor dammage to the plug, but it was out. Just in case your woundering, I had to use my foot to get about 60 ft*lb of torque on the thing, my 140 lb frame, and tight spaces don't work well. Controtionists? I'm unimpressed... I had to put that force on the short little ratchet with my foot, and still hold it on there with my other hand... It was intersting!
The AMAZEING thing? The transmition is over full! What the heck. I'm on a perfectly flat slab of concrete, and some has leaked out...
My question, why would the oil be black?
Thanks.

The diff. fluid, being 80w-90 or 75W-90 starts out fairly dark as fresh.
I did the same exercise about 2 years ago and used Redline Synthetic 75W-90... Huge difference in drivability. Smoother shifts and eliminated some grinding in 3rd.

why do you think they call it "black gold"?
I switched mine to amsoil and the difference was amazing!
Sounds like you need someting with detergents in it to get the black crud out.

why black? No telling how long its been in there. There was a great post from Wally some time ago re: flushing the trans and the mixture to use. I searched 4x and don't see it now. Maybe he will repost. Not knowing the history of your trans, I've heard of draining, and using a magnet to search for filings. The mixture was half Dextron and half paint thinner or something like that (but don't use that based on my memory!), jack rear end, run for 2 minutes, drain for 2 hours, refill with the previously mentioned gear oil or swepco.

According to the POs recoards, he changed it with synthetic about a year ago.
I've had no reason to dought him, as everything else he said was done, I've verifyed as done.
The new synthetic I bought to topp it of when the leak does it's thing is a yellowish color.
Yet one more reason I need to rebuild the unit.
Lets see.
1. Need a 2.75 rear end.
2. Worn second and first syncro.
3. Minor leaks.
4. Black fluid.
Hum, I don't have 2,500 bucks to drop on it right now, so it looks like I'll be doing it myself. This will be fun!
