S4 Boot Hatch Lock

S4 Boot Hatch Lock
Has anyone had any experience with the hatch locks?
Mine has never worked with the key but is fine with the remote release so I have no idea if it siezed or if I have the wrong key!
All other locks on the car work with the ignition key.
The question I'm asking is if i stripped it down and it was the wrong key is it possible to set the tumblers to match my key or would I be better getting a new lock and key?

Depends where you are located. The rekeying can be done. There is a guy in PA that does it. Also done others have done it by themselves. Plus there are international place that also makes keys from pictures so should be able to rekeying the lock.
I have used the guy in PA with great success. I don't have his info handy. You can either search or I will post his info later.

It is possible that the previous owner changed the upper hatch lock mechanism (like I did) and never gave you the corresponding key for it.
I removed the upper hatch lock mechanism (takes under a minute) and brought it to a locksmith, along with some 928 lock wafers. Keys4Classics sells them on eBay. It cost me $70 to rekey two gas caps (I had lost gas caps to both of my 928s, and the replacements had separate keys) and the hatch lock.

Also, if you do rekey the upper hatch lock, ask the locksmith to give you ten minutes with the lock cylinder after he's removed it.
I brought mine home and:
1) Put it in a beaker of denatured alcohol
2) Put the beaker+lock in an ultrasonic cleaner. It was disgusting what came out of there.
3) Blow dried the lock cylinder with an air compressor. Be careful not to lose wafers or springs.
4) Brought it back to the locksmith. He rekeyed the lock.
5) Reinstalled it, using teflon (PTFE) spray to lubricate the lock. You don't want to use grease because it acts as "flypaper" for dirt and grime.

Around my neighborhood, the locksmiths did not have the proper tools to work on the 928 cylinder or copy a key.
I used Tony.

This thead:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...larm-lock.html
took me all the way through disassembly and rehab of it. In my particular case, one of the tumbler blades had broken and another was bent and binding up (If you don't know what a tumbler blade is, read the thread).
I ended up just matching the two "good" blades into a workable pair and leaving one hole empty.
A good evenings worth of fairly detailed and precise fitting and filing and assembly, but it's clearly shown in the threads and can be done with simple hand tools. I used a Dremel tool and small hobby files to get everything fitted.
While it was apart, I got 25 years worth of crud out of it too. Scott isn't kidding.

My lock had the same symptoms, motor opened it but key would not budge. I used the above the link to remove the lock, clean the old grease out, sprayed WD40 in the lock crevices and gently exercised the lock back into life. Key now fully operational. Trim fasteners were a fiddle.
Good luck

Remote means the pull switches by the doors - not a remote fob.
While some have added aftermarket KE systems that can open the hatch - factory spec cars never came this way. There may have been a few Porsche custom builds - but it was never a model year feature (strange on a luxury car in 1995...).

Rear hatch lock assy`s are notorious for breaking. There is a pot metal pawl in the unit that breaks. especially in winter when its cold and lock is harder to turn. If your using the long key, it will set the alarm but will not open latch from outside.
