That VIN is for a '78 Euro, PET only has the option codes from '80 to 95. Maybe Jim Doerr has additional info on this ol' beastie?

Harvey, was Porsche able to get you a COA? If not, I could make you one (obviously less official).

Its a base model '78, so the options are pretty simple.

Also, if you would like more documentation for #579, you could get a sustitute bond release from the NHTSC. However, you have the original import paperwork, so its really not needed.

Yes - its got a metal section which moves the wheel about 1 1/4" towards the driver. It helps if you're tall and have to lean right back to avoid the roof, at least as an interim measure until you can find a non-sunroof 928 to buy.

Talking of which, I should see if anyone local wants an extended hub steering wheel in good condition.. I have no use for it :D

Wow, thanks for taking the time, Viluer. Indeed a curious list. I don't have any (gold?) Porsche script but do have fully-powered driver and passenger seats. Weird. Also, does the rather vague light metal wheel option refer to dials, dishes or both?

Finally, I've always been struck by the seemingly odd interior color scheme. I have what I describe as "chocolate" leather everywhere (seats, pillars, headliner, door interiors, complete dash treatment etc.--basically a full leather interior); I also have a black pod with color-matched steering wheel and to boot this burgundy carpeting throughout save the piped carpeted area (brown) that separates the front and rear brown leather consoles. Was hoping to get some more info about determining my interior color codes. Anyone??

Anyway, thanks so much, Vilhuer.

The VIN tag on the A-pillar under the windshield is the country-specific VIN, so the JB0 is the VBS-code for a US/Canada -spec car. I'm guessing the WP0ZZZ number you list is the one from the passenger side fender in the engine compartment?

Rob Edwards 01-14-2014 02:21 PM

Design 90 wheels weren't an option in '88. My understanding is they were standard starting on '90 GT's and were optional on '90 S4's.

Rob Edwards 01-15-2014 11:52 AM

Nope, that's only 15 numbers, and no letters. Sometimes one can narrow down an incorrect/incomplete VIN using the last 5 and the YOM letter, but not in this case.

Shoot a picture of your A-pillar VIN tag and post it. Or e-mail to roberte01@gmail if you can't post here.

Rob Edwards 01-15-2014 12:03 PM

Here are the 85-95 VIN digit decoders. Note that VINs contain no letter O's, only number zeroes. Of course that didn't stop the guy who typeset the '85-89 Tech specs book from getting that wrong, but they fixed it in '90:

Dan, was wondering the same thing myself, but wasn't Greg's car an '87? Or was "Blown 87" a C4 Corvette? Can't remember now.

Interesting that for 85-89, Japanese cars had their own serial numbers, but not in '90.

I have a '90 from Japan: WP0ZZZ92ZLS840164 - so #164 in the ROW series. It does have the option code C08 for Japan. In comparing it to earlier Japanese cars it does not have the fender add-ons, steering wheel horn-sticker, etc. so it looks like there were fewer differences required.

Rob Edwards 01-15-2014 02:50 PM

The wikipedia page on VIN tech is quite the history lesson, lots of different standards over time and place.

what does factory pick up mean exactly?

Means that the buyer traveled to Germany and took delivery at the factory.

Good morning Rob, did you received my email on my GTS? I did send it a couple days ago.

Thx, Richard

Rob Edwards 01-21-2014 11:44 AM

Hi Richard-

Oops, clearly I'm not checking the gmail account regularly enough... :icon501:

First, thanks for the pics, that interior is frickin' gorgeous- time capsule.....

Second, I played with the VIN sticker pic in photoshop for a while and can't make out the complete number.

What I can make out is WP0ZZZ92LS542???, the last 3 are illegible.

Below that is the engine and trans number, which is M2842-81L-A2816.

All of which tells me that this is a 1990 Euro S4 automatic.

Let me know if it's ok for me to post the two pics you sent, and perhaps others can read the tea leaves as well.

What would also help to narrow down what it is, is to eliminate what it's not.

If you post a full description of all the options you actually see on the car, it will allow us to rule out some possible VINS, which have options you don't have, and narrow the possibilities down.

Rob Edwards 01-21-2014 06:37 PM

Here's Richard's VIN decal (below)

I see 139, 328, 340, 567, 650, 935, and 980.

That limits it to one of 4 VINs, ending in 131, 315, 528, and 627.

So Richard's must be WP0ZZZ92ZLS842131.

Still makes it a '90 Euro S4, not a GTS, though his avatar pic looks an awful lot like a GTS....

Agree thats what it looks like to me.

Of course, Richard could just go look on the front-right side of the engine bay to read the VIN tag on the frame just under the cutout in the front right body panel.

A few cars have shown up in Europe with factory rear quarters.. there's one LHD which cropped up a few years ago which has Gerhard Berger as a PO; also a 1990 with factory GTS quarters. But the 1990's are most likely post-sale addons.

There are at least a couple of 1991's which were given GTS quarters to help sell them off the dealer floors.

richvm 01-22-2014 09:13 AM

Hilton, as of right now i am still in the US and my GTS is in germany. I can not just run over and have a look! Just came across this tread on the VIN numbers and had my S4 checked by Rob. That's way i thought he could check on the GTS as well. Unfortenatly i can not remember the VIN out of my head.

Rob- I do remember the engine code is M28-50. What does that say to you? ;)

Rich

Rob Edwards 01-22-2014 11:18 AM

M28.50 says GTS automatic. But I'm so confused as to which sticker and which VIN is from which car on which continent that I'm not even sure of that any more. :)

richvm 01-22-2014 12:06 PM

AAAARGHHHH! ;)) Slow down now. The sticker is from my blue GTS as shown in my avatar and pics i send you. THAT ONE IS A GTS! No doubts about it! We only have to figger the VIN or stop right here uuntill i go to D!

;))

Thx Rob

Sticker is definitelly from satin-schwarz-metallic '90 S4.

You are killing me guy's!! How in the world would this sticker get into my car??

Rob Edwards 01-23-2014 12:28 PM

Very good question- I wouldn't lose much sleep over it till you can get back to the car and shoot some more pics of the A-pillar VIN tag, the chassis tag on the right side front fender just in front of the coolant reservoir, the VIN sticker that should be somewhere on the first couple of pages of the warranty book, etc.

Here's a pic of Richard's car in Germany, pretty convincing 92-93 Euro GTS, from the looks of it.

There is no A-pillar VIN tag on ROW, thats a US DOT thing (like the VIN sticker on the door jamb showing production year/month).

The one in the cutout of the front right wing (fender) at the side of the engine bay is there for all and is the one on the actual frame of the car, so is most reliable.

There is possibly also an aluminium tag riveted just near the bonnet (hood) latch for the German market (UK cars have - not sure on EU).

Bucko74 01-23-2014 09:21 PM

Thanks Dave, yes you are correct, I had 2 numbers back to front.

I think there should be A-pillar tag at least on all EU GTS if not all ROW GTS. I'm not sure when it was started but at least some early S4 don't have it so it was some time in between.

Its true that there is no door jamb sticker other than color code sticker in at least most ROW market cars. Definitelly not in EU cars.

It should be in EU cars. Its not in Japanise for example so its ROW market specific if it needs to be there or not. In Swiss cars its different specific to that market alone version what was possibly put in by local importer.

Here are all the VIN tags on my 95 GTS. One on the left (passenger side) A pillar, one on the right front wing (fender), and an Australian compliance plate near the hood latch, together with the build date tag. The only other info is on the right (drivers side) door jamb, which is a sticker with colour and interior codes. Edit: plus the sticker near the wheel well with VIN and option codes.

Rob Edwards 01-24-2014 03:34 AM

Cool build date tag, Dave! I thought that the metal VIN plate next to the hood latch was a pre-S4 thing, like this tag from the Holbert car:

It has to be in all EU cars. Those kg numbers are part of registration requirements. All '78-95 originally registered in any EU country must have it.

Dave928S 01-24-2014 03:58 AM

The Australian plate certifies compliance with design rules, which cover such things as emissions, lighting, safety, etc., and must be fitted to every car sold.

I would appreciate info on

92a0821076

Thank You!

Rob Edwards 01-24-2014 02:22 PM

92a0821076 is one of those VINs that doesn't show up in the database. I have come across a couple of instances of this, a few in the '89 MY, and a block of U.S. '85 cars that are 'missing'- Rob Rossitto's old car is one of those.

Sorry I don't have it!

MikeinBloomfield 01-24-2014 05:34 PM

I'd appreciate the option info on my VIN:

WP0JA0922CS821020

I haven't been lucky enough to ride in many other 928s, but I think I have a leather interior option?

Thanks!

Vilhuer 01-24-2014 06:03 PM

Rob, 92a0821076 does show up in the list. A = 1980. Its in PET at 17 digit format WP0ZZZ92_A0821076. This one do not have any options listed. All what is known is its German car with manual gearbox.

If you find some unknown VIN's it would be good to know. It might be possible to fill in gaps.

WP0JA0922CS821020

1982

M484 Symbols for controls

M650 Sunroof

MikeinBloomfield 01-24-2014 07:32 PM

Thanks! Love my car, I don't think there's any gold script. Must be the passenger upgraded seat.

Light metal wheels? I'll have to look that up.

Reason why I even mentioned M438 Porsche script on doors gold instead of M438 Comfort seat right is that option list don't include M437 Comfort seat left. I would expect there to be left seat code also if right seat is included. Unless left power seat was standard for '82 MY. Which could be possible for US cars. One possibility is that M438 means Porsche script on doors gold for '80-81 MY and Comfort seat right for '82 and later MY. If this is the case there were only 27 cars which had gold Porsche text under door from factory and just 2 of them were US model. In any case M438 has multible meanings. It was possible to get left power seat without right one in ROW cars up to '84 MY.

Light metal wheels? I'll have to look that up.
I believe M401 means 7x16 flat disk wheels. Very common option on '80-82 4.5L cars.

You managed possibly find latest VIN missing from the master list. I have known all the time that there are some VIN's missing but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Certain MY Japanise cars were expected but not so many '85-86 US cars. '86 vs '86½ hole 0938-1000 has been known but even it can be smaller.

It at least means that we don't have info. Possibly that Porsche don't have info either. Maybe that many of those cars were never made. Its probably combination of all three possibilities. All we can do is to try to find missing data.

If someone would provide me with info regarding the following, I'd appreciate it: WP0JB2920LS860245

Rob Edwards 01-26-2014 06:11 PM

This car is 33 cars older than my '90 GT, which was born on 1/10/90. By any chance is there a 'born on' date on the VIN sticker in ther driver's side door jamb? I'd be interested to know the date.

Just saw this post for info was missed .....

Details on the sticker are accurate, but the option blacked out is M220, which is limited slip diff. I can't understand why someone would take an LSD out. It's worth physically checking to see if your car still has the LSD.

Other info

Dave

Thanks for the look up.

We have it off the ground and did the wheel spin, when we first got it up, just to check, no indication of an LSD, with this information I'll now have to look closer perhaps the clutches are worn out.

If there isn't an LSD it becomes even more intriguing. If the delete was done at the factory, you'd think they would have printed a new sticker, if the delete was done by a PO, they were very thorough to black out the code in the manual.

The sticker in the car is harder to read, but I'll check if it is blacked out as well.

Is there anything else that I can learn about the interior, it is somewhat different from the other 928s that I've seen either in person or in pictures.

Thanks again for the help.

Lance

So early '90 MY should be December 1989 or close to it. Definitelly long before February.

First thing to check under car is stamping under differential.

wpgshark 01-27-2014 11:48 AM

What specifically should I look for?

I've reviewed
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ited-slip.html

The only stamping I can find is on the bottom edge of the casing flange, right against the differential cover. On one side G2812 is stamped in, which is different from the G2813 that the VIN describes, on the other is 00507 which I assume is a serial number. It would be interesting to know the history of the tranny.

Reviewed some more, went under with a copper brush and raised a 1 K right in the middle, if what I've read is correct that means the car has an open dif.

thanks,

Lance

Vilhuer 01-28-2014 01:36 AM

G2812 1K 00507 is 7th manual gearbox made for '89 MY.

... or maybe the original owner didn't like the characteristics of an LSD when driving in wet/snowy conditions and asked them to take it out ... although you would think they would just swap the spool if that was the case. Warranty work you would think they would just replace parts/the whole box and leave it LSD. It'd be interesting to the get the story from the original owner.

wpgshark 01-28-2014 12:47 PM

I've sent an email to the PO, hopefully I'll get a response, certainly is a riddle. If i get a chance I'm going to pull the cover off to see if the dif is open, or worn out LSD.

Rob Edwards 01-28-2014 12:55 PM

Buy a $15 USB borescope from Ebay, and run it through the fill plug hole. Much easier than pulling the cover, replacing its gasket, etc...

wpgshark 01-28-2014 03:37 PM

Good idea on the scope, funny thing is I own a remote camera probe and didn't think to use that.

Just a general question about option codes

My 89 still has the sticker in the rear compartment but the option codes don't start with an 'M'.

The codes are:

C02 158 220
418 570 650
04601 05821

I think it means:

C02: Rest of US
158: Blau Reno radio
220: Locking diff (40%)
418: Side moldings
570: Rear A/C
650: Sunroof

Does anyone know what the 04601 and 05821 means?

Thanks

M319 = smaller fan pulley (86 mm diameter), which requires a 20" fan belt. I think the intent was either for warmer climates, and/or for cars with rear A/C.

It's a warmer climate option, which gives slightly higher fan speed. I have M319 option as 'additional engine cooling for hot climate countries'. Australian early cars commonly have it ... my '82 does.

Rob thx! This is great intel that isn't even on the window sticker to my surprise. I was hoping you'd say LSD but alas , I'm stoked anyway. The more I sort through it, the more cool stuff I find. Just discovered the H4 headlamps which from reading threads are an upgrade? Or euro? Also the borla cat back I like. Cup (?) rims, check. Rub strip delete. What/where is the paint code? The car has been resprayed but it seems to have been red originally.

I dig ur photo on the bluffs. Laguna?

Can't wait to cruise pch is this car!

My memory failed me. It wasn't built in February of 1990. The date on the sticker is 22 Dec 1989.

Thanks Vilhuer.

I am a new owner of the 928, and new to the Porsche world :)

The car was owned by a single owner all these years, he bought it when he was in US, and shipped it to Dubai when he moved here.

So from the VIN and the details you have mentioned above, what do you think about the car? The car registration copy mentions that it is 1982 928S, so I am assuming this is a 4.7L, not sure of the bhp and other technical details. It is also a 5 speed manual transmission.

Any further details would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Dan

Vilhuer 02-17-2014 11:25 AM

Its '82 MY US model so it must have 4.5L engine if its still original. M28/15 engine is rated 220 SAE Net hp @ 5500 rpm. Torque is 265 ft.lb which is 348 Nm @ 4000 rpm. Competition group option makes it look like S but its mechanics are still non S version like all 78-82 MY US cars. Other than brakes which were same as in S in all '82 MY cars.

Dan-

Unfortunately I can only do 1980-1995 928's, as that is the date range for which PET has the option codes. Sorry about that!

LT Texan 02-18-2014 04:11 PM

Guess I should have started reading at post #1 and stopped at #2 before getting excited.

Oh well.

16" wheels
Limited slip diff

I bet that would be the entire list of options.

Did rub strips come on the '78? I don't have them.

Interesting only the left seat is heated.

I thought the lack of the 928 decal on the back was due to a rear cover repaint.

I bought this car late 2012 with the engine out due to a broken timing belt. Lots of boxes of parts.

The LH coding plug is what makes it 300hp.. easy enough to plug in a different one and make it the same as a RoW S4 :)

Still 20hp less than it could have by simple coding plug change. Only reason to leave it original is if local fuel is still as bad as it was in 1987.

The '928S4' decal/tramp stamp on the rear bumper cover.

Nope, never heard of such an edition, not from the factory. Weissach, Jubilee, Kenwood, SE, Clubsport, yes. Laguna Seca? No.

I have a 87 s4 with the option M150 which suppose to be no catalyst and being able to run with leaded gas, my question is what exactly is this option? what is different, missing or added to the car when this option is selected?? I would imagine it should have no O2 sensor or catalyst converter because neither can run on leaded gas without being damage but my car has both along with the air pump.

Vilhuer 04-05-2014 10:11 AM

Air pump should still be there. It just pumps into cylinder heads exhaust side instead of converter. Converter and lambda sensor should not be installed.

Hmm, this.is going to take some investigating cause my air.pump dumps are into the cats not the.cylinder head..maybe my car has been worked on and these parts installed at a dealer at some point cause it's been in california and there is no way couldve passed inspection to get on the road and also my car was shipped to france for a couple years..maybe they had to install it.before it was alllowed to re-enter states...another question, for it to operate without an 02 sensor or cats does the ecu have a different program to run it?

Would you have access to info for a 2001 911 and a 2011 Cayenne?

Rob Edwards 04-06-2014 05:25 PM

Apologies, I can only do 928s from 80 to 95.

There was a time when PET 7.1 and 7.2 allowed lookups on any Porsche but obviously that is no longer the case. Wish I'd saved a non-networked PC with one of those old configurations. Oh well.

Yes. There is coding plug which tells ECU's what map they should use.

That wouldn't do much good since Porsche changed their server setup and old client software simply cannot get data anymore.

No option code for LSD (220), so unless someone fitted it after the car left the factory, no.

Interior spec isn't apparent from the data from PET, except for whether the seats are raff leather (vs. standard perforated), and any exclusive option codes.

Originally Posted by biturbomax (Post 11305121)

I think you mean the leather seam on the passenger side of the console (see pic below)? If so, your car probably has a full leather interior - do you have a leather dashboard with stitching, along with leather-stitched door handles etc?

There may be a 5-digit code at the end of the option sticker in the rear of the car - PET lookup for VIN doesn't show those codes.

Originally Posted by biturbomax (Post 11305121)

I'm not sure what the 686 radio option is - but on my '87, the lack of an option for hifi amplifier is because the car has 4 speakers, hidden behind perforated panels like on the early cars. One in each door, and one in each quarter panel behind the front seats.

Wild guess: Canadian Emissions?

(ok, maybe not such a wild guess - I started digging through the various car papers and lo and behold - found a COA! It's the only thing mentioned there under Optional Equipment that is not on the list you gave me based on the option code sticker).

I'm sure you already knew it but your car is one of the 42 SE produced for the 88 MY.

So the equipment is standard for this serie:
M058: Impact absorbers front and rear
M220: Locking differential
I302: Type designated on rear end
I330: Radio Blaupunkt Toronto
I383: Sport seat, left
I387: Sport seat, right
M474: sport shock absorbers
M494: Additional amplifier
I567: Windshield green graduated tint

Not many of them were silver by the way.

Any picture, please?
What are the engine and gearbox numbers?

Silver? Nice.. don't see many silver ones for sale. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a good silver SE about 4 years ago when I had the chance and the owner was in a hurry to move house.

Did you buy Angus'?

Louisiana special edition?

In fact, I begin to wonder if this option code is correct, because many cars delivered outside French speaking countries have it.

I think it's correct for the 1992-1995 period, but not for 1980-1982.

Rob Edwards 05-05-2014 01:50 PM

I think it's the wrong code for the early cars as well. Kinda begs the question about 484 as well, which could either be

484 Symbols and insignias for switches and instruments
484 Version for USA

Not sure which applies to Rich's car.

C = 1982 and 0359 is so early that it was done already in late 1981. Title has to be wrong or it at least was standing somewhere for several years.

Alas: this kind of missing 928 option codes data is not electronically kept any more by Porsche, and he had no idea if there would be any paper records available either - let alone where.

There is still another indirect way that I am trying at the moment, in due cause I will let you all know what that outcome is.

Hey Rob, do you know of a way to find original owner information for a 10 digit (1978) 928 VIN?

I have been looking for a car my Dad sold in 1986-and might have found it. He doesn't have any paperwork from the car (28 yrs ago)-
VIN 9288200500, which I believe decodes to 928, 1978, US engine (2), and number 500.

Rob Edwards 06-13-2014 12:24 AM

Short answer is, no. But let me make sure I understand- your Dad owned the car until '86 BUT was not the first owner? And you think that 9288200500 is the car he owned? And he knows/knew the name of the first owner? I'm not sure PCNA kept track of the car's original owner at that time, though you'd think they would, for warranty purposes. Might be worth a call to Porsche services:

http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...fauthenticity/

Alternatively, (assuming this 1986 transaction was in KS), maybe the Kansas DMV has really liberal laws about releasing previous owner information? I once managed to track an old corvette in Wisconsin back to 1980, maybe Kansas is similarly helpful?

Perhaps this form?

http://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/trdl302.pdf

HY M8NC 06-13-2014 11:19 AM

First-Thanks! You kick ass. Second-you are right. My Dad bought the car in 1978 and sold it in 1986 when I was 14. The car I found is in the city he sold it to, and was bought "from the original owner in Kansas City". Same color, pinstripe interior, 5 speed. Paint on the drivers rear quarter is different than the rest of the car (my Dad backed into a tree on that side in 84). there is a lot that says this is the car.

Now for the bad news. Owner wants waaaaaaaaaaay too much for it. Hasn't moved/ran in over 14 years. In fact it's been in a barn with the windows down for that period of time. The pictures are nothing short of scary. It's really worth more in parts than it is complete-to everyone on the planet except possibly me.

**update** if anyone was following this-it's not my Dad's car. Another one from KC just like it. So, back to the search...

Steve ... it's not the 6th

Here is the master Vin thread ... https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...in-thread.html

First 1978 US + Can car was 9288200011

I don't know what the split up of US and Canadian cars would be, but yours is the 634th 1978 car, but would be referred to as number 645.

Number 500 is referred to in post #368 above, and here's a thread on #30 ... https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ue-thread.html.

There's something wrong with that VIN. Where did you get it? Is that your vehicle? Non US? As far as I can tell it's a 1997 911, but you probably won't get a lot more info here in the 928 forum.:p

Sorry, I don't know jack about option codes on a 2003 Honda Civic. I do see 31 records pertaining to that particular 2003 Civic. For the low low price of $39.99, you too can see all those records. If you're considering an 11 year old car, I'd argue that that will be the cheapest $40 you ever spend on it.

RHD 1990 928 S4 Automatic.
Delivered in Japan
Equipment:
I567: Windshield tinted, upper part
I980: Seat cover - draped leather

Quite unusual to find a RHD Japanese car, and with so few options also for this market.
For the 1990 MY, 57 RHD cars were made for Japan, all but one were S4's.
Of course, the remaining car was a GT.

Ranfurly 06-26-2014 05:17 PM

Thanks guys I appreciate the checks done. The option codes returned, or lack of options, is a bit unusual. This car is showing about 32,000 km's and is pristine condition - blue (unsure which blue at the moment).

It has a full leather interior in cream (seats, door inserts) and blue (dash and console) so I was expected a few more options in it given the leather interior. It makes me start to wonder about the car....?

It has a full leather interior in cream (seats, door inserts) and blue (dash and console) so I was expected a few more options in it given the leather interior. It makes me start to wonder about the car....?

It probably has a couple of 5-digit codes on the sticker in the rear hatch - they don't show up on the PET lookup. My '89 has similar options.. WP0ZZZ92ZKS840934.

It also has full leather interior (leather dash, console, headliner, quarter panels etc.) with red piping on the seats.

I added 220 myself (LSD).. the only things I'd like to add to it are GTS rear quarters, the electrically adjustable headlights (89 has the infernal hydraulic setup) and the pollen-filter evaporator box.

Hi Luis-

For whatever it's worth, this was originally a Canadian car. I have no idea whether that makes any difference RE: federalization or your state's regs on registration.

Also sounds like it a nicely optioned car.

Going from what I've read in Roger's thread about his '88 SE, any car from 87/88 in Canada is now fair game for import to the USA without federalization, as they're 25 years old.

Factory production ended at the start of August, so as of this week, all of MY89 is fair game too?

When importing and calculating the 25-year time period customs goes off the date of first registration. Both dates could be close together but not necessarily.

This is the car I am looking to buy. It is an 87 5 spd, black with tan interior with 167,000 miles. Hi miles I know, but it is the one I have been wanting to purchase for some time. Bummer part - it is at a used car dealer. :(

Rob Edwards 08-06-2014 10:34 PM

Hi Luis-

That VIN is missing the last 4 digits. All I can say right now is that it's a US/Canada 1987 S4. :) (Actually, the check digit narrows it to one of 220 VINs, but I can't go any further than that...)

RE: the data source, versions of Porsche's PET used to have the functionality to check options for a given VIN.

Wow- 5-speed, LSD, no sunroof, passenger mirror, tire trailer hitch setup? Sounds like the ultimate track-day car. :)

Thanks rob:) near perfect option/year combo in my eyes.

I208 trailer coupling, what is that?

Rob Edwards 08-16-2014 04:47 PM

I would assume that it means factory trailer hitch.

Thanks Rob,
I'm searching for my first 928 and appreciate your help.

I was also wondering if all australian delivered 85 autos got the A28.06(lower ratios) trans rather than the A28.05?
Also apparently some Aust delivered 85 MY also got the M28.22 engine optioned with M151(9.3comp ratio pistons) and had a fair bit less hp.
I was considering that M151 and M251(A28.06) may have been an engine trans package?
I ask all this because I really don't want to end up with a lower hp (m151) 928 and as the trans designation is really easy to see on the build sticker under the carpet in the hatch, it could be an easy I.D for the engine option.
Hope that makes some sense! Lol
Cheers
Jason

Hi Jason-

I'm afraid that I am not knowledgeable RE: variants among Australian market cars. From the PET database it looks like there were 163 928's with the C23 country code for Australia. The problem is that all but 18 are listed as A28.06 automatics with the M28.22 engine, but the other 18 have no engine or trans listed, and no option codes that would indicate manual vs. automatic.

Regardless of what incomplete databases say, after 29 years the only way that I would be _positive_ that a candidate car has an M28.22 and an A28.06 would be to directly inspect the engine stamp pad under the upper radiator hose, and the transmission serial # stamping. Lots can happen to a car in almost 30 years...

Ruri-

That VIN belongs to a 2008 911 Turbo. I'm sure it's lovely but I don't know what its option codes are. Only for 928s from 1980 to 1995 are the options known.

Arqdiogo:

1979 – 928 910 2837

Dunno on these two VINs, can only decode options for 1980-95 928s.
