Default I hate smog tests

ASM Emission Test Results

M2: 25 MPH 2468 14.0 0.0 103 22 99 0.60 0.10 1.33 936 317 958 Fail

AFR was 13.8 and 13.7 from a display screen but not on print out.

New Maf, less than 500 miles on legal cat (but several years old). Not the freshest gas, but some was fresh.

Smog guy says when all three gases fail, usually a cat issue. I noticed a bit of HC smell while the car was idling prior to testing, didn't smell normal.

I'm a "little" scatter brained, which means I am not 100% sure which brain or chips I have in the car right now. Could be Euro, could be US with US chips or US with modified Euro chips.

Magnaflow Calif catalog lists single TWC 36014 (with a couple variations on inlet size) seems like most places have it same price $180.

On the plus side the smog guy is great, walking distance from my house, used to work on 928's, proof being he recalled the joy of adjusting a dual disc clutch. Test only so he can't do any work, but good to have somebody testing that knows a bit.

First thing I think I need to do is put the car in the air and check a few things. Could be the cat is still under warranty too. I need to see what it is I had put on, but I know it was a legal Magnaflow just prior to the Calif catalog requirement.

if your AFR was 13.8/13.7 then the cat will not ignite, and therefor your emissions will be high.

O2 sensor? Or does your 928 not have one?

Direct quote from a past owner of a muffler shop:

"You will be exceptionally lucky if one of the very low cost replacement convertors pass a smog test a second time. The materials that make a convertor work are precious metal.....exactly how much precious metal do you think you are going to get for $150.00?"

And if you've had any recent experience getting anything warrantied, in this country....how many reasons do you think the convertor makers can come up with about what your vehicle did to ruin their convertor, which they are not responsible for?

Put a factory cat on it....get increased horsepower, from the better flow....or just plan on doing this every two years.

If you lived in the Phoenix metro area, and had collector car insurance, then there are no emission tests. Dont know if other areas have similar laws/loop holes.

Mike, not sure if my 85US stock cats fit your Euro, but you are more than welcome to my extra set for smog testing, etc.

Mike we have new factory cats in stock for 78-84 cars for $395.
And to add to Greg's comment, my scrap guy pays less than $10 for old aftermarket cats but $100-400 for factory ones.

A used factory cat will outperform a new aftermarket POS for years.

Just don't do this:

If this is for the 85 Euro, does it use the old 78-84 cat, or an 85-95 cat? If the latter I have a spare you can try as well, if that's easier.
