Muffler hanger design on 1978 models
I recently purchased a Borla Cat back system for my 1978. The mid muffler section went in fine. However the back muffler section is incorrect. With my OEM muffler the hanger is located behind the muffler. Another bracket comes from behind the bumper and bolts to the side of the old muffler.
The design from Borla has the hanger coming down right behind the exhaust tips. I have seen many pictures where the seems correct. Do Porsche change the design? The system I bought is correct. I have spoken to Borla and the had not seen this before. They have agreed to modify the muffler and add the hanger on the correct side for me. I will send them pictures and the hanger bracket so that the can determine the exact position to place the new connection bracket.

78 different to 79.
Also the front cross brace can get in the way of the Borla but can be removed - Porsche removed it in 79.

Yes many changes like your battery box hangs off the differential and is not part of the body as it is on 79 and later. Have told Borla many times over the last 15 years or so that their system does NOT fit the 78 but odds are most of those people are no longer at Borla

The Borla fits a '78. Just needs a custom rear hanger extension off the stock rear hanger (off the battery box), and a little pipe massaging near the front of the battery box.

The old very brown 1980 has a two pipe Borla ( long ago discontinued ) which runs a single rear two in two out muffler and yes it sounds very nice with MSDS headers Does get very close to a 295 rear tire at times ! With the custom x pipe and merge to single pipe before it splits again to two pipes it mixes the exhaust pulses quite well giving it a smoother more even exhaust note which sounds like higher RPM than it is...perhaps the "European" sound people speak of ??

Just a quick update. It has been awhile and still no fix for the muffler on my car. But hope is now on the way. Borla has agree to pick up my 78 and take it to their shop to ensure exact fit for the complete exhaust. The engineer would not just add a hanger to be done with it. I really appreciate they would not just do something to get rid of a noisy PIA customer.
The will use the measurements to design the correct hangers for the 1978. They will pick it up and bring it home when complete on their dime.

My setup sounds like an old boat (in a good way) and starts to sound really healthy after 4,000, especially when downshifting .
It was perfect because it has a mid but no end muffler and my rear mount for the pumpkin broke before I bought the car.
It had a rusted out botched old Ansa which literally broke in half when I removed it.A single 3 inch pipe for a 4.5 is just right and keeps low end torque.
Remember don't run a pipe that is too big or you will lose a lot of low down torque and not make it up in top end power.
Nice to know that there are still some companies with good customer service out there that still car about non mainstream cars.

Here's Dave's page on how he installed on his 78:

This is a great site for OB's.. Kind of like a Dwayne's garage version 1.0

Well I just got my car back from Borla. I started it up and it sounds great. I could not drive it except into the garage. I have no seats or interior. Everything I mean everything is at the leather shop. Did not get a chance to crawl under there to inspect but they did a very good job. It is very solid with just the play coming from the hanger. The pipes exhaust tips are centered very well in the opening. When I was looking to install it the tips were to close to the bumper and not centered in the cut ou. I will post a picture of the muffler once I can get under there.
