Diagnostic hardware/software for figuring out LH-Jetronic issues
Does anyone know if there is a computer or software that can plug into the LH-Jetronic system and help me figure out my running issues on the 88 S4. PO indicated that the porsche dealer had something called a Hammer.
On my Mercedes, there are outfits in China that remake some of the computers. I'm hoping that I can find the same.
Thanks

yeah...hammers and sharktuners are expensive. you may want to outline your issues here individually. The 928 is very analog and the LH is not going to expose all faults like an obd2 reader might.

The Bosch "Hammer" was the official factory diagnostic tester, there some around. Theo Jenniskens designed a diagnostic tester with the same functions as the Hammer, available here: http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/diag/Diag.htm
The Sharktuner is a tuning system, but it also has great diagnostic capabilities. It works differently than a code-reader: Instead of reading stored codes (of which there are only a few), it provides a real-time display of all of the sensor readings as seen by the ECU, and how the fuel and spark are being calculated.
If the problem is with the LH then rebuilt units are available from John Speake, JDSporsche in the UK (JDSporsche.com), and stocked in the states by Louie Ott in Oregon (www.performance928.com).
There is no point in spending money on ECU's and testers until you first make sure that the sensors are working properly with the basic WSM tests, and that there are no split or leaking hoses under the intake, worn-out O2-sensors, etc.
If you are headed to Third Coast then someone there will have a Theo-tester and a Sharktuner. To make the best use of that, do the basics first.
I hope this helps.
