Default Trying to fix an oil leak and cooling fan issue before Frenzy

Hello -
I’ve been away for awhile. Sold an 86.5 about a year and a half ago. Just picked up a Venetian Blue 88 S4 in very good to excellent condition. It needs a few things, but fortunately they are items I can prioritize.

I’m trying to fix an oil leak before Frenzy. Oil is leaking from the oil pressure sender’s base (the part that threads into the block). I’m hoping it just needs to be snugged up, but don’t want to attempt to do so if I might shred an already compromised seal and make it worse. I can drive it as it is, but it’s messy and I’d like to fix it before Frenzy if possible. The sender looks new. I’m thinking it was replaced recently and the base was cracked loose, or even had to come out and the base and sender separated on a bench. I’d like to remove the oil filter, then put an open wrench on the base’s hex until I feel resistance, plus a couple of degrees more and hope it stops the leak. Any advice before I proceed?

The other issue is the left (driver side) cooling fan and the cooling flaps cycle on/open and off/closed in about a 20 second cycle after the engine is warm. The right fan hasn’t been coming on at all. I cleaned the fan grounds (did not help), then I pulled the wires off the temp sensor on the intake (made no difference). I touched the wire connectors together and the fan comes on and stays on until I separate the connectors. Repeatedly I was able to make the left fan cycle on and off (touch the sensor wires together = ON, release = Off). Someplace I read that fans ON when shorting the wires, but fans off when the wires are reconnected to the sensor = replace the sensor. This could be wrong information, or my memory is bad.

Looking forward to attending my first 928 gathering. I’m lucky it’s 7.5 miles from my house and the weather forecast is looking spectacular so far.

Thanks

RE the fans. I swapped the left connector on to the right fan and it works, but cycles on and off the same as the left fan had been. Based on searching the forum it's starting to look like a bad secondary fan controller up front.

Jon, for the flaps - pull the fuse or connector when the flaps are open and leave them like that.

There is a large metal seal above the threaded housing. Worth tightening as I doubt you can damage it only help it seal.

Roger,
Thanks, exactly the info I needed. Also, even with this cycling fans/flaps going on, the temperature gauge is reading a bit on the cool side (below halfway on the gauge).

Roger,
Is the cooling flap fuse in the main panel in the passenger footwell? If so, what number is it? I was able to slow the leak significantly, but can't put the torque on the housing I'd like using a short adjustable wrench in the tight space. Looking for a 26mm crows foot to put on a long extension.

Thanks,
Jon

There is a fuse relay chart on https://www.928gt.com/default5.htm Should give you the info you need. I live 10 miles from frenzy..a much longer commute than you. See you there

For the oil pressure sender,
I would remove the sender.
get a new sealing ring at NAPA,
and some loctite PTFE pipe sealant,
put some sealant on the threads,
and install the OPS

Re:sealing ring, it is a large hollow aluminum crush seal, always thought is was a very Porsche specific part, not to be had at Napa. (?)

Hey Captain,
While you're playing down there, if your O-ring for the dipstick sleeve hasn't been addressed in a while, it may be a good time to put one in. Oil can leak too from here. This is often overlooked.
